Ok well me a few friends want to hit up northern VT before the end of the season. we are going to take Rt 100 up from mass making sure we hit RT 17 . was wondering what other roads would the locals recommend? PM me if you want to keep it on the Down low lol.
You could stay on 17e into NY and go look for "The Magic Mystery Road", you could get some eats in Warren, and then run 17w back to 100 and continue north to 108 which will take you up past Stowe and Smugglers Notch, that gets pretty interesting for a short while. Also don't forget to plan your trip sooner than later to beat all the leafers and to invite me!
Disclaimer: I'm not a local and there for don't know the best spots, but up there it's hard to loose.

How many days? Rt. 17 from MA is tough day trip. Combined with cool mornings and early sunsets you surely won't have time for anything else but a slab up, rt. 17 twice and slab home.
If you stay the night, there are three passes across the Green Mountains that are fun. Rt. 73, rt. 125 and Lincoln Gap which has a short dirt stretch. As noodles said, after that you have to choose either north to Smugglers Notch or west to the Adirondacks. If you head for the Adirondacks, I would spend the night again as there are plenty of roads for a full day+ of exploring there.
