    2004 ZX6RR

Just did the deal on this bike today and picking it up tomorrow. It's currently a streetbike with 10k miles, I bought it to make into a race bike over the winter. Anyone here have or race one? Looking for any info, suggestions, advice etc before I start spending money on parts...thanks!

Sell it and buy a race prepped bike.
Or throw some bodywork on it, and ride it.

Insure it, total it, buy it back, sell the good remaining OEM parts off it, use that money for your build

Listen to the wise one. MUCH cheaper.

If you insist, talk to scottyg22 or mmracer. They might know a thing or two about racing the green bikes.

Agreed, but I am buying the bike for CHEAP money and hoping to find at least some of the parts I need used...

Throw some bodywork on it and go racing. The suspension/motor is faster than you are at least for a while.

    Gearing..down a couple teeth - ask Scotty G
Set up basics points on suspension
    Already has slipper clutch
    Frame sliders
    Ebc pads and new fluid.
slip-on andpower commander if you are wealthy
    Lots of track time!

    Thats about it...

    Re: 2004 ZX6RR

My advice: Listen to Pasta & just do the VERY mechanical basics. Don't dump a ton of money into it that you wouldn't otherwise burn cuz it's gonna be worth next to nothing in a year or two. It's probably worth more as a titled street bike than it is a race bike.

Had you not already bought it, my advice would have been to find something that's already race prepped... doing that alone will save you a small fortune.

    Re: 2004 ZX6RR

I race a 2003 ZX6R. I'm old and slow but really enjoy it.
When looking for parts, 2003 and 2004 parts are all compatible. Kawasaki did not make any significant changes from 2003 to 2004. Kawasaki did make changes for 2005, so do some research if you find 2005 parts. They may not be compatible.
Aside from internal engine parts, I believe most all parts are the same for ZX6R and ZX6RR.
A great place to look for parts is forums.13x.com (the WERA board)
Don't mess with the engine until you are running with the fast experts. The stock engine will get you through the novice class, and probably the amateur class.
Start with suspension. You can probably pick up a good used rear shock at a reasonable price and have it refreshed by GMD. Have your fork internals upgraded, or buy a used race set and have them freshened up by GMD.
You may want to start with used race bodywork unless you have the money to burn. (ebay, WERA board, etc) It will likely get rashed during your first race season.
Get good frame sliders and a good steering damper.
Mike Martire at GMD races a ZX6R and is an expert as setting up the bike.
When you see the green flash lap on the track and disapear from view, that'll be Scotty Greenwood.

    Re: 2004 ZX6RR

Thanks for all the input. The plan was basically to just put race plastic on it, freshen the susp and go. I was thinking it would be light years better than my current trackbike, 95 ZX6R, and I could piece together the rest of the race parts as I came across them.

I looked at it yesterday, and made a deal with the guy to pick it up today and give him the cash. The bike did not have a title which seemed shady, but I was never going to register it anyway. I had a state trooper (family member) run the VIN this morning just to be sure it wasnt stolen. It wasnt, but he also informed me it was illegal to buy or sell a vehicle that SHOULD have a title and didnt. If anyone owed money on it, and reported it stolen to cover their ass I could be fucked (assuming it ever came to that, and not only lose the bike but be charged with a crime). So, even though I felt like a Dbag about it I backed out of the deal today. Not worth the bullshit. Thanks again for all the input, the search goes on! (I really want an SV anyway)

Good choice. A friend of a friend is in court thursday for the same story. buying and selling a bike that didn't have a title.

Get something that's already prepped. Buy a bike from the fast guys if they still have some of their deals around, those are setup perfect, and you basically get all the bells and whistles for free with the prices they sell them for. I've done it both ways, building or buying, and buying is the way to go by thousands of dollars, even with minimal and used parts.

Cool, cool... I think you'll be better off this way anyway. Blessing in disguise, me thinks.

title reprint is 20 bucks from dmv i've had to do it twice. No reason that it shouldn't have a title.
