I don't race, but count me in on a rock moving party. Just let me know the weekend.
I just checked on my new leathers in the closet. All this talk of rocks has them literally shaking.

More airfence would never be a bad thing. The question is how to get more money for it?
From what I know a lot of people have already done a lot of work either giving or raising money to get the airfences we already have. If there is a way to easily raise more money for more airfence I'm sure people would be all ears though.
Some manual labor in the runoff areas might be a fun way to kill some time and drink some beers but like some have already said, in order to make a permanent difference you would have to move a lot of earth.
Is this another one of Jay's "I've been doing something for a little while so I am a dick to everyone about it" post?

Im up for moving some rocks in 6 anytime. I think I was corner working T4 that day that 2 people ended up over in T9 down near the fence. It doesnt usually happen like that that often, most bail before they get that far down the hill. They usually keep it upright and ride off into the sunset until they can turn around to re-enter (which also can be interesting if they dont pay attention to when we wave them back on) One of the bikes from that crash in T9 definitely was messed up badly, I think it was more the curb that it hit first that did a lot of the damage though if I remember right.
Honestly other than there not being enough fence, there are two problems that i've seen. 1 they leave some of them out there during the SCCA and BMW car events etc and they can get ruined, I saw one melting as an old school Mustang was stuck on top of it half still in T6 and literally half over the Jersey barrier that it pushed back a couple feet. Was a great site from below T6 lol. The other problem is, no matter where we put them, you guys find more creative ways to crash. Up after T8 we put one hanging vertically in a tree... someone managed to lowside, the bike and i think the rider hit the curbing and went up and hit that bag in the tree. Thats the wreck that Watts was involved in when the bike came back out into the track and he found it parked in the middle of T9.
With all the walls and the lack of runoff with the current track configuration, fences will help make it as safe as we can but you are kidding yourself if you think its "safe". T9 is a scary corner until you figure it outThen you can definitely do some passing through there.

Call me crazy, but shouldn't the track be paying for this stuff and paying workers to do it. You guys are the customers.
Am I nuts in thinking that way?

The only way the track is going to pay for anything is if enough people decide that if things don't change, they aren't going to race. If indeed there is a new track being built in the next few years, I HIGHLY doubt they are going to invest anything to make the old one safer, but if you really want to try, start a petition

Good luck with that.
The way to address this as Jackie said (not in so many words) is to get involved with the new track design. Ask if they have a safety committee. I bet they will have one and would welcome a board of current racers who will be using the track regularly to have some input.
Which at the same time could also solidify their plans to not worry about a roadcourse at all. Bruton is a business man, he will do what makes business sense, he's not a local guy like behr who was more concerned with local racers / fans. If more racers show up, more fans show up, and we show that there is a viable business reason to keep things going... Improvements will come, possible a new track so he can get the AMA back but it definitely doesn't start with "let's threaten to not race".
Come join the advertise thread if you really want to help try to make a difference. Recent post stray at #58 on page 3 I think. Something definitely needs to be done but good business sense is the only way it will happen.

I already touched upon this on the last page (at least from my point of view).
On one hand I'm of the mindset that I pay good money to race at a venue and that venue should do certain things to take care of their customer. But on the other hand I can face the facts and being pro-active about your sport and club isn't a bad thing. Similar to your story I recall MANY times walking Downhill race courses or walking the Motocross track and doing the same thing... picking up rocks as you walked and moving big nasty bitches off the track.
I've been racing as long as Jay and I'm not cynical about it at all. Time has nothing to do with attitude.
