Rossi did exactly what I was sure simoncelli would do (and is known for). He really didnt need to make that pass right then.
Doesn't say too much about anything - I don't have to race to know that was an illogical pass, even for the most aggressive racer. Rossi is obviously faster than Stoner, so why not set him up for the next corner, and go on by? Then he's left Casey in the dust and moves on to chase 2nd place I think it would have been?
He's passing for 3rd - less than half way through the race, in the rain. Just stupid all around, overly arrogant. I would have said the same thing if I were Stoner, first he gets taken out by an arrogant asshole, and then the race marshals help that asshole back onto the track and leave him hanging there.
I don't want racing to be a gentleman's sport, and I love the drama of the race as much as the next guy, and I don't disagree that Rossi is a true talent when it comes to motorcycle racing. But that was a poor poor decision, and just makes him look like a tool. If you're that good, show the guy a wheel and then truck on by him through the next corner on your way to winning the race.
I also want to footnote that I've only been watching motorcycle racing for a few years (since I started riding), and I am a huge Lorenzo fan. I am not claiming to be an expert at racing, I'm stating my opinion based on the circumstances given at the race.
If you guys watch the race everyone was passing on that turn..even before Rossi made his move.... I just watched it again and yes same turn.
I like them both they are the best riders in THE WORLD and I am pretty sure they can judge the turns/passing better and also are always pushing it to the limit thats why we all watch it just the excitement...

lorenzo is an arrogant, unimaginative douche, and that symbol on his helmet is f-ing gay.
and yes i like rossi, but i've also been watching him race for over 12 years - way back when the best class had real bikes in it. there is a reason everyone refers to him as the GOAT.
also, that pass was a bit stupid. every racer gets wrapped up in the moment at one time or another. there are countless examples from MotoGP over the years.

I am more surprised that Rossi crashed, than I am that he went for the pass.
I also thought the pass was a bit over reaching (given how far back he was when they got to the braking area), but I thought for sure he was just going to run them both wide.
The thing about Rossi and that particular pass in my mind is this... I've seen him come from way back on top contenders in the dry and wet and watching the I was thinking the same thing "no way is this going to work! you can't pass a championship contender in this manner". Yet this was one of three or four that didn't work out fine out of say 75 or 90 that I can recall. Do you remember how many times he passed Biaggi in the first race when he switched to Yamaha?Sure it worked out poorly but he was aiming for the win and had caught Stoner at a REALLY crisp rate and he went for it. No one is perfect but given his track record I wouldn't call it dumb. I would probably call it dumb for an amatuer but Rossi is paid millions to do one particular thing... win.

IMO, Stoner's fast. Doesn't matter what you put him on - and he's faster right now than any other rider, including Rossi, because more than any other rider he seems to be able to adapt to different machines quickly and seemingly with ease.
But let's not forget that in 2005/2006 Stoner was crashing a LOT on that Honda. Crashing while on his own, and crashing into other riders - frequently. He blamed it on no front end feel, but whatever the reason, the other riders accepted it as part of racing.
Now that Stoner has a WC under his belt, he's some sort of prima donna? Gimme a break. And I LIKE Stoner! WTF??
Bottom line is; none of us were on the Desmo at the time Rossi attempted the pass, no matter how far back he was at his run into the turn on the inside of Stoner. And he looked completely in control to me - and he didn't run overly wide, so obviousely to me anyway, he was being aggressive, but not reckless.
Rossi is the GOAT, and deservedly so.
But what Stoner apparently hasn't gotten thus far is this;
just because you've proven that you are a threat at any given track on any given day, doesn't make you immune to mistakes.
The simple fact that Rossi was willing to (and man enough) to approach Stoner in his own garage - in front of God, the Repsol Team and let's not forget the TV cameras, says more to ME about the reasons WHY Rossi is the GOAT than Stoner will be able to do for (apparently) a VERY long time.
Was Rossi's pass a stupid move?
Nope. It was just a racer doing his thing.

Disagree.
Lorenzo has been racing for years. Any attitude he "learned" was likely developed well before he got to Fiat Yamaha.
He's been a very animated racer for years - IMO probly developed from watching the attention Rossi was getting for his own flamboyant style, and post-race antics.
Lorenzo watched as Rossi climbed to the top, and Rossi has the two things that Lorenzo wants: the admiration of a world-wide fan base - and the title of GOAT.
I can see the math;
The world was watching a winning Rossi as a 250 rider for his flamboyancy (among them, Lorenzo), and fell in love with him as a racer, and a breath of fresh air to the sport
+ After years of winning and trying to make to MotoGP Lorenzo finally gets the opportunity he's been waiting for - to go head to head against Rossi, on the same equipmant, and he knows he's just as fast............everywhere
+ Fans the world over see Lorenzo beat Rossi and the others for the Championship
= The incredible arrogance we all see today out of Lorenzo.
And now Lorenzo now has one thing that Rossi doesn't want:
Lorenzo is an arrogant douche.
It all makes perfect sense to me.
