That was absolutely intentional dude!! He was doing it every lap, there was a better one on the last or 2nd to last lap where you saw smoke pouring off the back... the commentators (I watched on MotoGP.com) were going nuts. It was pretty ridiculous to watch the whole race, great cat and mouse they were playing at the front. Sick vid.

    Re: Casey Stoner Drift!!!

that was simply amazing. I watched the race on my DVR last night, when he drifted turn 3 on the 2nd to last lap me and my roomate were both amazed. Casey Stoner is the man!

And yes, drifting in cars is much easier. I would know because I have no problem throwing out the ass end of the Evo to mess around once in awhile (dry, wet, snow, doesn't matter) but I would never even consider trying to do it on purpose on the bike.

What amazes me about Stoner is that he is the first of the electronics (traction control included) generation, yet he drifts like no tomorrow.

I haven't seem too many footage of Nicky (except for when he is knocked out by other riders) but he too is a drifter. Just wondering if he manages to drift the Desmo a la Casey Stoner fashion.

    Re: Casey Stoner Drift!!!

One of the commentators in the movie Faster said the discovery of drifting bikes was actually a breakthrough for tire technology. When Gary started to drift what they found what was counter intuitive in that when the rear wheel spins faster then the front wheel the rear tires surface overheat but only a thin layer of the surface heat up effectivelly leading to less rubber consumption. Which of course was great.

However, as tire technology developed and softer grippier compounds were found this turned into a problem for Gary in that it did not suit his drifting style and he was high siding all over the place.

Gets better. Drifting was thought to not be the fastest way around corners (probably is still not). Personally I guess the traction control going out of corners does the trick. Just watch Casey, fast into corners and fast exits. Kid slides when he opens that throtle in the middle of the apex, yet he slides in a controlable fashion.

    Re: Casey Stoner Drift!!!

They were also talking about the Duc vs other MotoGP machines during this race, commenting on Stoner being the only one to really be able to wring it's neck properly. All the other bikes, the M1 in particular have 'forgiving' throttles, using as much intelligence as they can to manipulate the rider input to make the bike as easy to ride as possible. The Duc is just the opposite supposedly. The commentators noted multiple people commenting on Casey's near robotic precision with throttle control, and wondered what he'd be capable of on something like the M1 with that skill.

    Re: Casey Stoner Drift!!!

I didn't see anyone else drifting to the extent that Casey was doing it. Rossi's wheels' were neatly in line for the most part. Casey was complaining about traction problems all weekend. I still think it was a pace vs traction issue as opposed to a preferred turning technique. That's why I posted IMO cause that's what I *think*.

    Re: Casey Stoner Drift!!!

was interesting when they had side by side comparisons of brake/throttle usage between stoner and rossi. Rossi was MUCH harder on the gas/brake than Stoner was, later/harder braking and practically WFO everywhere while Stoner was much more conservative with the inputs.

    Re: Casey Stoner Drift!!!

While it may not be preferred (e.g.: I'm sure Casey would have loved to have more grip @ the rear wheel), when faced with less than ideal traction, all I was saying is he was definitely sliding it on purpose and not a "whoops look what just happened" mistake.

That seems to corroborate what they were mentioning about the electronics being more "rider friendly" on the M1.... love the coverage w/ throttle and brake for each rider while on-board.... makes for exciting TV for sure!
