I finally tracked down an OEM steel tank for the Fizzer that I'm going to prep as a spare. Short term I'm making it gas tight with a new cap and either a new petcock or a repair of the OEM one. Cheap, quick, good'nuff.
Stage 2 prep will be electrolisis to deal with the rusty interior. May line it, may not depending on how it cleans up. I'm leaning towards not and just leaving it fogged with WD40 and sealed up when not in use.
Stage 3, it needs paint. It's been down on one side, minor dent at the front that I don't care about, bare metal in a couple spots I do. For now it'll get a quick spraybomb from a can, but eventually I'd like to have it taken down to metal and painted properly to keep it intact for as long as possible. What's the ballpark range I should expect for that job? No decals, fancy schemes, just a nice dark gunmetal gray will do the job nicely.

He just did a front fender for me (dent repair and new paint), came out awesome and very reasonable.
He's in Manchester, CT. maybe you could ship it? I would suggest NOT putting spray can paint on it until you talk to him and see how cheap it might be to have it done right...

My cost to do a tank starts at $250. Depending on the dent it could slightly go up from there. As around. My work speaks for itself. Call 774 200 6395 if your interested.

Josh if you end up having JR do it, he's right on my way home from NHMS and I could get the tank to/from him if you bring it to the race weekend.

$2000 (and climbing) in unexpected vet bills since the 4th have put a damper on spending for cosmetics any time soon unfortunately. I'm not even 100% I'll be able to race this month either, should have tanks to work with, Sudco hasn't finished my carbs yet though, bah.
Hope your pet is ok bud.. I feel you.

I hope the pet is ok too. What is it and what's going on? My dog developed epilepsy at 1 yr old... dog neurologists are crazy expensive, and I always figured I'd be the tough love type of guy where if the dog was too expensive or sick I'd put it down... nope, I'm a big softie for the furball. I'd pay vet bills before I paid rent or bought myself food.
Quick rundown of what we've been dealing with:
July 4th we noted both kitties were sprawled out in sunspots upstairs, normal activity. (This is also the hottest part of the house and we normally don't run the AC much.) Later that day we noticed Lance hadn't moved, and worse was mostly unresponsive when we checked on him so off to the emergency vet for visit 1. IV fluids plus electrolytes plus antibiotics after blood work showed low potassium. Vet noted his spleen felt large. That morning we transferred to our normal vet, X-Rays were inconclusive but he was rebounding so we brought him home to monitor.
Next week, heat wave started, noted he was drooping his head and acting sluggish so I forced some pedialyte into him, cranked the AC and waited for the temps to drop so I could transport him to the emergency vet again. (Had my wife's car, no AC, 45minute drive in that heat would have been fatal I suspect). Bloodwork confirmed low potassium again, but as we caught it sooner he was in better shape and rebounded quickly. Got a prescription potassium supplement to add to his food and an ultrasound scheduled for the next day. Urinalysis showed an infection rolling so he got on a full course of antibiotics, ultrasound showed no issues. Thyroid tests good.
So now we're seeing how he does with the potassium supplement, going back in for a check Friday at the two week mark. He's happy, alert, active, eating and just generally being the kitty we brought home three years ago so I've got my fingers crossed that he just sucks at absorbing potassium and needs the supplement. In the past we've joked that he has 'old man' moments where he's slower, more lethargic but we chalked it up to his personality. Since we've added the potassium he's not slowed down.
I'm glad he is doing better, I can kind of imagine you trying to force feed a cat pedialyte, and while the situation isn't funny... the image is![]()
Glad he's doing better Josh. Sometimes Animals can be your best friend.
Tank cleaned out, interior is spotless now. Gave it a final powerwash on the inside, followed by a blow dry, quart of iso-propyl alcohol sloshed around and drained and finished by fogging it with WD40. Touching up the exterior to prevent the exposed bits from rusting now. And by touching up, I mean Landrics, anyone else who appreciates a good paint job, look away.![]()
White paint fell right off, the fluorescent orange is being more stubborn. That said it's all good metal underneath. I'm really tempted to strip it and just clearcoat it as is... Dana might get jealous though.
Landrics, does my stripping it reduce the labor costs any if I decide to just let you finish the job, and would you be able to clear it as a bare metal tank?
Edit: More bondo than I'd like to have seen, I don't think much of it is deep though. Turns out where there was bondo, the stripper just wasn't effective. Really leaning towards cleaning it all down to bare metal and leaving the dings under clearcoat.

Been researching, seems the 'proper' way to go clear is to powder coat after proper prep. Guess all the spray clears still have a nasty habit of rusting underneath.

Sticker shock may keep me from doing anything. For now I'm just going to keep cleaning/de-rusting/etc while I try to figure out what I want to do.
...there is always that electro-luminecent stuff... paint it in stripes front to back and wire the circuit so the stripes vary with my speed, such that the stripes 'stay still' as I go by...![]()
So, to do the clear coat right, it's not any cheaper than a good paint job. Decisions decisions.
Patience and rattle cans....
Some tasks I have the patience of a saint, others, none. For some reason, painting prep and painting I just can't seem to make myself do properly. Then I get pissed at the results and don't like having sloppy looking things. On the flip side, I don't have a money tree in the back yard so I may just have to learn patience yet.
