For the life of me, I can't see how this would ever work. The thrust coming from an exhaust isn't strong enough to do any appreciable work on a multi-hundred pound bike and rider combo. Even if it was, the engine would have to be under load at a high RPM to generate said thrust at which point the bike would have already looped over backwards without some sort of ECU based power reduction (traditional wheelie control). If this is intended for higher speed wheelie control, traditional down force generation techniques would provide far more force than exhaust thrust.
I vote gimmick.

Actually exhaust thrust has been in the news recently in the NHRA. They recently started using headers with a more shallow exit angle in order to add thrust, and according to the crew chiefs it actually does add an appreciable gain to ETs and trap speed, so much so that a lot more teams are starting to use the same setup.
Granted these are ~10k HP nitro engines we're talking about, not 250HP race gas engines. But when it comes to racing, every little advantage helps, no matter how insignificant. I assume the engineers over at Ducati are smart enough to know whether a new idea is a just a gimmick or just crazy enough to work.

I honestly think this may be to control back pressure better for optimal engine performance. On corner exit, I bet there is a sweet spot in which you can change the back pressure to produce thrust and also limit power (since you can't use it all), but I'm guessing that it is a very very very narrow window. You also have to map it against and with the TC system. My brain hurts even thinking of these algorithms.
That said...marginal gains are still gains. If they figure out the puzzle more power too em! Its without a doubt very very cool.

Yeah, top fuel engines are in a different league. When you're making around 5.5 times the horsepower in just one cylinder vs. the total output of a MotoGP engine along with exhaust gas temperatures that are astronomical in comparison, it's hard to relate the two.
I may have focused a little too much on the anti-wheelie aspect of the article and I still think it won't do much, if anything, in terms of taming them. For general improvements in efficiency by controlling the direction and speed of the exhaust, there is some merit. Some standing mile and top speed motorcycle racers use their exhaust to reduce the low pressure zone behind the bike thereby reducing drag. In terms of it being an appreciable motive force on an engine of this scale, I'm still skeptical.

Like most Italian motorized products, I'm sure it'll take years to get semi reliable.
Why not just keep upping the engine cc, like they've been doing for years?

Thought that the whole idea was to generate trust from the exhaust for preventing the bike to lift the nose....as crazy as that may seem...if that is the case I hope it works out for the Ducati Motogp team....no better way to respond to the unfair winglets restriction...
