I've got a pretty simple fairing mount system currently, two bolts, two zip ties, and uh... yeah... that's it. This setup puts all the fairing's weight on the mirror stay, which finally failed when I ran it for it's shake down TD last year. Fortunately Larry was able to fix'er up nice. (I still need to get a coat of paint on it...) I'd like to improve the mounting system by adding another mounting point.
I have a headstock mounted cluster bracket, it's the typical race unit with a main spar pointing out away from the stem at a slight upward angle. The cluster arms are welded to it. If I were to extend that main spar an inch or so, it'd but up nicely with the front fairing in the number plate region below the windscreen. My thought is a second tube that fits into the main spar. Drill the end of the tube to accept a standard well nut, drill the fairing to match. Slide mount tube into main spar, mount fairing, bolt through fairing into well nut.
From there all that's left is securing the second tube in the main spar. I can see two methods, the first is a clamp setup, cut a notch or two in the end of the main spar, and slide a hose clamp over it to provide the necessary restraint. Option two is to drill through both the main spar and mount tube so that I can just shove a big R clip through and call it good.
Anyone got comments or suggestions on this foolish plan?
See the jaunty protrusion proudly promenading upwards to the left? It's got a hole in the end, I want to put things in it.
