Hey Degs,Originally posted by Degsy
Alex, what year of manufacture are your helmets? I can buy a brand new Suomy right now from Bettencourt's for about $120, but it was made in 2001. Illegal for racing use.
worth checking.
Good question. $140 Arai was made in late 2000. Bought as a 'backup' and minibike helmet. $240 Arai was made in 09/02. This is my Primary helmet, the A-Lister.
I thought I read / heard something about a helmet needing to be less than 4 years old to be approved. So I asked around about it in April and was greeted with somefaces and told "no it needs to be Snell2000 approved, we recommend you replace your lid every 3 or 4 years" Since I just go my Racing helmet painted up all snazzy-like... I was a bit paranoid about it...
Quoted from LRRS 2006 Rulebook.
-------------------------------------------
Page 22
4.0 RIDER EQUIPMENT AND APPAREL:
HELMETS: Helmets must be full coverage with an attached face shield. Tear-off's are not allowed. Quick release helmet straps are also not allowed unless original equipment. The helmet must meet both DOT and Snell 2000 approval or the British Blue Label standard BSI 6658 Type A helmet standard. The appropriate stickers must be attached. Any helmet that has been damaged or suffered a severe impact must be replaced or sent to the manufacturer to be inspected. All helmets must pass tech inspection. The riders number must be displayed on the helmet.
Here's WERA's Rulebook
-------------------------------
a) All WERA competitors must wear helmets which have a Snell ’95 or ’00 approval sticker, or must be BSI or EC approved and must be in good condition (as determined by Tech) and not manufactured more than 5 years prior to the current race year. Helmets must be taken to Technical Inspection and must display a WERA Helmet Tech decal prior to being allowed on the track. Open-faced and dirt bike helmets are not allowed.
Here's CCS's
---------------------
5.1 RIDER EQUIPMENT
5.1.1 Undamaged full-face helmet with face shield and bearing a stamp of approval from
one of the following international standards:
D. O. T. FMVSS – 218 (USA)
Snell M95 and M2000 (USA)
BS. 6658 TYPE. A (GREAT - BRITAIN)
ECE 22 - 04 & ECE 22 - 05 “P” (EUROPE)
So looks like my A-Helmet is good to go, just like those $120 Suomy's from Bettencourt's.![]()

Has anyone failed tech for having tear-offs on their helmets? I sure know that I haven't, nor ever been told not to use em--but its in the rulebook
Alex, your helmet is legal thru the 2007 season---in 2007, a snell 2005 approved helmet will be required!
next season,2007, lrrs will be informing everyone of this rule change/update + it will be mandatory!
Fine with me. Figured that baby was due for a change after 06 anyway. Thx for the heads up Chadc0re.

Jay, if you want your Arai helmet fixed, PLEASE see Deb or myself(or any Arai expert) - your cheek pad problem can be taken care of immediately and for free - I love the product and don't think anyone should be upset over their cheek pads in an Arai helmet. They had a bad batch of glue in a cheek pad production run and now there are fixed cheek pads available. In Arai fashion, they not only made sure of better glue, but they from THEN ON taped over the tab in question to reinforce it.
Wow, is it April 1st?
Talk about the dumb leading the dumber, it sounds like this "safety director" buffoon doesn't know a shit thing about brain injury mechanisms or how helmets actually work either. He knew some dude in 1965 that said some off-the-cuff remark about plastic helmets? Jesus h Christ buddy, get it together.
It's a known fact that Arai helmets transfer more energy due to applying higher braking forces on the head during impact due to their structural design. Arai is a firm believer in giving more severe impacts attention as long as the accepted threshold for fatal g-force is not surpassed, this is why they will only certify to the most sever of standards, Snell. Any plastic shelled helmet will transmit less g's than Arai helmets within the sepcified impact energy range and surfaces, regardless, across the board, period, end of story. Whether that 's the real issue here or not is beside the point, but the guy is citing more minor injuries and falls and insinuating that the softer plastic helmets were to blame. That's a pure misinterpretation to the opposite effect of the reality of how those materials and construction perform in those situations.
Until they've looked at all the other factors, instead of the brand labels staring them in the face, they need to read-up on how crash helmets work and what the design goals are and how different materials perform. Truly ridiculous that more informed people aren't a part of these organizations.
