MX, just because they offer 2 or 3 times the protection

    either or

side note...this is the first time I have had road race boots and I was pleasantly surprised how much feel you have with them compared to stiff mx boots.

For true sumo (dirt, jumps, etc) I'd wear MX boots, but for Loudon, I wear road race boots. Much better feel for pegs, shifter, etc.

    Facts to back this up?

Kurlon: I did the Loudon Supermoto race in 06 with my MX boots (jumps, dirt). I found in the pavement sections my ability to hang off was greatly diminished in MX boots. The are too tall and stiff and couldn't get the ankle movement needed, actually made me ride slower! Doh.

As with anything with many opinions, my bad for not saying IMO
I have no facts other than a IMO to back it up.

Looking at them both, it "seems" obvious the MX boots would offer much more protection, the stiffness of them being the most IMO. Plus the 5 large snap clips holding the 2 sides together on MX boots vs some velcro and plastic zippers on roadrace stuff.
To each their own, I'm slow anyways so the stiffness of the MX boots isn't hurting me much

Re: Motard - Road Race or MX boots?

My point is you'd think that off-hand, that MX boots offer 'more protection' because they are so big and stiff.

Thinking about it more though and I highly doubt it. High-end roadracing boots are designed for roadracing, and all the impacts and falls that come along with it. High-end mx boots are designed for motocross. Two very different sports and styles of crashing.

I know my high-end Alpinestar Supertech-R's have a full exo-skeleton that supports and protects the ankle, my high-end Fox MX boots do not.

This is something I'm going to talk to the Dainese and Alpinestar folks about this weekend at Laguna Seca. Be very interesting to hear the expert's response to this, as opposed to my musings.

Re: Motard - Road Race or MX boots?

If you're going to roadrace only, I'd say go with the RR boots. If you're going to do some real SuMo (pavement/dirt mix, backing it in, etc) what I've found is the soles of the RR boots can get peeled back from the front edge to mid sole. I now have a pair of A-Stars No Stop Trails boots I use for Sumo, dirt track and ice. They give more feedback than an MX boot, but seem to take the punishment of the SuMo riding better. Sanded the soles flat on a belt sander ala Supercamp which really helped.

But the big caveat is, I'm a crappy Sumo rider, so take all this with a grain of salt.

I'll be interested in the results of your conversations as well since I have been thinking about going SuMo for a while. I wear A* Tech 8's for MX which are very "sturdy" feeling compared to my A* SMX road boots. Not knowing anything about boot construction (just my opinions) I would not feel comfortable wearing the SMX on an MX track, but I'd feel ok with the Tech 8's on pavement...now I'm wondering why I wear the SMX boots at all. Time for an upgrade I guess.
