Hi Guys,
What is the gearing that you 450 5speed guys are running at loudon? I have a 2006 YZ450F and I am setting it up as a tard for a track.
Thanks for the help.
Nathan
I ride a crf but its a 5speed. I am running 15/40

15f 39r on my CRF... is also what I think most people run with 450 5 speeds

15/39 on a KTM 520SX converted to a 6 speed, wishing I had more top end...
WOW that seems tall. Does the YZ have different gearing than the CRF? I thought Tully was using 14/42 on his 08 YZ?
Thanks for the help guys.
Nathan
Not sure about the YZ but it should be similar
Tully geared his for TDs in general, not specifically to Loudon I don't think?
ANyways I'll double check mine but pretty sure it's 15/39 and it's a good mix of accel and top end. I am almost topped out going into the T3 chute and over the T8 hill... and top out around the 3/4 board on the straight but just carry it into 1.
More importantly it gives me good shift points coming out of the bowl and in other spots as well.
I think if you geared a tard for max speed on the straight at NHMS it would give you some pretty bad effects elsewhere on the track.

So, it sounds like I want around a 2.6 to 2.75 ratio. ( 39/15 = 2.6)
Anybody else have anything to add?
Thanks,
Nathan
I geared mine for multi use, I ride it in the woods and do trackdays with it...and I hate changing the countershaft!
For some reason, I thought I read the 08 had different internal ratio's?
Last time at NHMS I used a 12/38 combo and I was pretty happy with it. Granted it was trackday pace in yellow group, guessing 1:30-1:35 lap times.
The ratio seemed fine to me, good jump out of the corners and it never hit rev limiter on the front straight. The downside is, with the 12 up front, it destroyed my chain guide in one day.
When I went to VIR in the spring, I had a 14/42 combo and that seemed ok at that track as well. Obviously the front straight sucked, but I doubt it would matter what gearing you put on a tard, it would still suck

When I put the numbers together and added them up and divided by x, the final drive was very close to the same with the 12/38 on the 08 YZ450 5spd as it was on the 04 YZ450 4spd with 14/38. For what it's worth, 4th gear on the 04 with the 4spd is the exact same ratio as 4th gear on the 08 with a 5spd
2000 and up? maybe close to some extent! I'll comment on the Yammy...well because I didn't know other brands exist
2000-2002 YZ 426cc, steel frame, 4spd
2003-2005 YZ 450, steel frame, 4spd (Motors had the hardest hit in these years, 03/04 being the hardest of the three)
2006-2009 YZ 450, alu frame, 5spd with minor changes/improvements every year.
2010 YZ 450 = I want one![]()
