So we're closing on a house in Rehoboth at the end of the month. There's a house there, and a big ass barn on 2 acres. I had a preliminary look at building a flat track but the expense, equipment, and maintenance is completely unrealistic. So here's the plan:
Build a TT track for minis. The buildings take up very little space on the property and I pretty much have an open acre at the back of the property that's fair game.
I have the septic guy coming back in April to spread loam for his site work, he says he'll give me as much fill dirt as I want since he's constantly removing it and not needing it. He'll have his dozer there at the time and for a few hundo he'll cut in the track and mound up anywhere I want for jumps.
I'm thinking of keeping it pretty simple with just bermed corners and table tops. After I get the layout cut in by the dozer, I have access to a free bobcat to do the finer site work with. There is also already a water line run underground close to where the track will go so I could potentially set up a sprinkler system to keep the dust down.
CONTEST TIME!
I'd love to see your ideas of track layout. For all intents and purposes, the area is flat and about a 200x350' rectangle to work with. Sketch it out on a piece of paper and post it!
The other thing I want to do is build some enduro-cross obstacles to mess around on. I have a number of VW sized rocks and can have them moved around when the dozer is there. I'd like to set up the obstacles in the infield area of the track. There's a good amount of downed trees I can utilize, and I'm sure Kurtz will be happy to donate shagged out track rubber to make some tire obstacles.
If anyone wants to have some hands on with the project, we close on the 29th and I'll be starting preliminary layout directly following.

My buddy did this in his back yard. I followed suit because it was crazy fun throwing the ttr125 around and clapping out a suspension that was already blown out and not made for a 205 lb man to be gaping a 20' table top on. Lol
That being said, he said it was important to map out a course and then ride to see if it flows right. I cleared some land in my back yard and after I rode it, was able to see where I made a bank too tight, etc. The other thing he did was rent a mini excavator for the weekend. It was pretty cheap to rent ($100 or 2) and it worked really good for building berms because it rotates on an axis. Also, by taking dirt from one side of the track and building up the other side with it, it gave a place for water to sit so it doesn't stay on the track.

This is super cool.
Man. I need to move out of the city.
A man of many names...Jay, Gennaro, Gerry, etc.
There's a nice commuter rail station in Attleboro, 40 minutes to south station. Rail is much better on the south shore than the north.
Good advice from all, I'll definitely work in a drainage plan and I'll have to check with my future uncle in-law to see if he has a mini as well.

Congrats on the new place first of all.
Take it slow, being a new home owner, you won't have much extra time and energy to build your park, let alone ride it..haha
Make friends with your neighbors, they will be more understanding of new use of motorized toys in the area.
And I'll second what everyone is saying on a track, lay it, and ride it before you put much effort into building it. When I was cutting my trails, I was laughing to myself as I was cutting them thinking about how fun they would be. Once you factor in speed, it changes everything

These layouts have been tried and tested many times, at great expense, in supercross and arenacross design, so check there first. My area that I had to work with is a bit smaller than 200x350, so I ended up going with a standard arenacross layout. I was suprised how much fill it takes to make the features, especially at full track width. I get it that you are talking minibike track, but still...
one thing I would do differently the next time: resist the temptation to doze up existing fill on the track surface to form berms or features. When you do, you just created a holding pond...
Yep, little one is due March 17th! Mark, you've been full of good advice since we started discussing your place last month, I appreciate it.
I'll get a layout going and ride it on the KDX to see how it flows. I figured if I can't go up to Loudon this year and race, at least I can bring the racing to me.

Neighborhood is fairly sparse. Rehoboth is a right to farm community so I expect anyone living there to not be a dick. That said, I will introduce my charming self, let them know "we might be riding some dirt bikes," and abide by a self imposed schedule to never start early or run late. I'm thinking weekends 10-5 is reasonable.
Of course that's all wishful thinking, there's no accounting for a turd in the punch bowl.

my dream: set up technical parts (endurocross style) to slow it down! logs! tires!
my reading:
-try to setup bigger jumps AFTER turns - if before, people go flying over the berm of the next turn...also if after/middle of a straight, people come in too fast...you also need space to land
-tabletop everything
-map/drain as mentioned
should be a different track in the winter![]()

Make it a bit more on the technical side, and get a few of these EM Electric Trials bikes.
Update:
Fuck. Maybe I'll build a track next year. Why didn't anyone tell me with an infant I'd be lucky to get my grass cut, let alone build a track?
That said, the adjacent lot, 30-40 acres of woodland, has some lovely loops. I hiked a few miles earlier in the week and there's a lot more to see!
