I'm trying to get a bike ready for this season and I have a question about case guards. do i need the full replacements like woodcraft sells.

or can i get away with the skid plate type, like this.

I have an 06 also and the Woodcraft one is Going to hold up a lot betrter in the long run....Vortex will get it done and pass tech but may Fail under a heavy crash. I lowsided many times and the Woodcraft one didnt budge...covers can break and allow the case cove to crack and your Done unless you got a spare.
So I would say buy the Woodcraft one.....also they will sponsor and support you like no other company with Race products that are buit to take a beating.
and get there frame sliders also.....worth it all day long. Mine have worn down the plastic and only had mild rash on the tail after a low side at 50+...so very happy with there products...
