is it only the 03-05s? because i like how their looks and above all the EFI (im carb retarded) but i've seen alot of nice pre-03s for good prices.

    Welcome aboard,

I know you mentioned 125GP bikes in another post, and that's what I run. There are quite a few 14-18 year olds in the class, plus some fast old guys to keep em honest.

It's a fantastic bike (honda) and since you already know the 2-stroke thing, it might be something to consider.

thats cool. i really considered a 2-stroke. but then i found how expensive they are. Rising sun sells them for like 10k and 19k?! and they aren't to cheap used either. plus i have heard they require alot more mainetence. etc etc. so those points, plus some others, turned me off to the 2-stroke idea. unless i'm wrong. i'd like to be.

If you can't do the 125 route as Paul suggested.. I'd recommend a Pro-twins legal EX500 over a SV650 at your point. Not because of the crank issue (which I'm well aware of) but for other reasons.

    EX is:
    -Cheaper
-Pro twins stresses carrying speed and less about motor and mods
-Way less bikes on the grid (LWSS gets upwards of 35 bikes..)
    -Power delivery is much easier.

You'll have a bunch of other Protwin newbs out there will you too. Oreo, Darrell, HBerry, (basically the whole CBR crew) and the EX guys are fairly cultish (which is great when you need help).

Do a season on the EX and then re-evaluate your situation. You can probably turn the price of the EX around easier as well (come out breaking closer to even).

Yeah, the 125 is not cheap new, but then it's a factory built racer. You can get a used '95+ one cheap. ~4 grand for a great package with spares.

They are the most advanced bike for the least money, but not cheap compared to the EX. Maintenance is a whole different ballgame. It comes apart like a swiss watch. VERY easy and rewarding to work on.

SVs are NOT cheap to run either. They don't crash well and motors are $$$. as noted all the newer ones break shortly after they start racing.

I agree with Alex, an EX sounds like the perfect choice.

I've never raced oneand my observations are just what I've seen around the track, but my teammate crashed one and it was pricey compared to an EX!

i guess it depends on how bad the crash is. in race trim the most expensive thing ive broken is a rearset. ive replaced a handelbar, shift lever (2x) i have to replace the rear brake pedal after my encounter with the wall

get the GOOD frame sliders and the bike will fair pretty well in a crash. especially if you can keep it on the pavement and out of the agriculture, thats when things go bad but thats true for any bike.
the bike is narrow enough that its hard to hit the motor on anything. the FI models come with a wider radiator which is pretty easy to lunch. but you can get more power out of the carb models anyways.
i guess the only prob i see with the EXs is that if you are in it for the long haul and arent looking to purchase a new race bike every couple of years than the SV is the way to go. it will grow with you, you get over 100HP out of those( not that it needs it). the EX will NEVER be as fast as an SV or compete with one no matter how much money you throw at it. an 80+ HP SV will get you far and be competative. (if you can ride) HELL! i know EVERYONE saw Wood doin like 12s out there on his SV right behind Greenwood on his Kawi.

that wasn't Jeff's SV and it was far from a 'regular' one. It was Doug Scheers with some super secret engine internals, rumor was it had lilke a +6mm kit.

Bike also had Ohlins SBK forks.

hmmm. i guess i'll start with a 500, and see if i want to move on to four-stroke or 2-stroke. How about regular things like tires? how often will i need a new set a of rubbers on an ex? on an sv?

what aftermarket goodies should i look for on a used EX? new suspension maybe? etc?

also, this may sound retarded, but do any of you guys commute with the same bikes u race on the weekends? i still need a way to school..........

With a EX you'll probably get twice at much tire life compared to a SV. Also Dave from Motorace has a SMOKING deal on EX500 sized Michelin's. Don't pass up that deal!

You should try looking for a used LRRS Protwin EX. Protwins EX's have limited (as in no) engine and exhaust mods, so try to find one with tuned up suspension. The deals are out there. Oreo's getting a very very sharp Protwins EX for $1,000. Keep your eye on the LRRSracing.com Classifieds for one.

Using your racebike for street duty isn't recommended, for a myraid of really good reasons. If you need a cheap commuter bike I'm selling my Ascot500 (which was my first bike).

not much to choose from for super stickies on the EX. dont expect to be puttin on some 209s cause it aint gonna happen. the tires on my sv lasted me most of the season, but that was with NO practices, and only 2 races a weekend.

no bike out there is "regular". well maybe mine

stiffer springs in the front + thicker oil +stock shock on the rear+ pipe+ jet kit+ air filter = 1:21s

That's just it. You can get into the 21s on an EX with similar mods for like 1/3 the money. (not without practicing though!!!)

Funny...I didn't even race there last year! The year before I did and we both know who was faster. I don't want to get in a pissing match with you again. I was just saying 12's on a sv is really good. I would like to see you do it on the same bike. I bet you wouldn't do a 17.
