Last season I got in the habit of throwing on my headphones and listening to some music before the start of a race... I find that it gets me pumped up to hit the track, settles my nerves a little, and gets me focused on the task at hand. So... you're in your leathers, the race before yours is almost at the halfway point... what songs are going to pump you up??? Some of my favorites for the track are:
-Anthrax, "Metal Thrashing Mad"
-Black Label Society, "Fire it Up"
-Motorhead, "Speedfreak"
-Iron Maiden, "The Trooper"
-Dio, "Rainbow in the Dark"
I'm finding that listening to these songs is kind of transporting me back to those moments at the track and taking away some of the misery of the off-season too!

I use the time before a race to breath, focus, settle my nerves and relax.
The last thing I want before a race is to be getting "pumped up". No adrenaline needed... or wanted for that matter.
What's this song? I can't remember....

Well I guess it doesn't have to be right before a race like I like, but maybe on your ride up to the track or the night before? I think there is some value to the emotive qualities of the music, especially the aggression of metal to put your mind in the right state to go for 1st place... I got the idea from Ben Spies who once said he listend to Kenny Loggins' "Highway to the Danger Zone" before a race.

Yup... before I started this ritual, I was running around like crazy checking things, stressing over whether my tire warmers were on long enough, and stupid little stuff like having my grid position written down somewhere on my bike... Now I just relax and let the music remind me of how I'm supposed to feel... not stressed out, just in the zone.

I usually find a quiet spot for a few minutes and gather my thoughts. Think about my goals, work my way around the track, etc. It was great when my dog was there because I'd sit in the trailer, pet him, talk through what I needed to, promise him I'd be back and then finish getting geared up.

Funny cuz Glenn Coolbeth my garage mate makes fun of me because I sit and meditate before a race and he is always pacing. I try to get to a quiet place in my head and go over the first lap from the flag drop to the start finish line just the first lap. Very important for me to do this! A good exercise I learned from one of our class champion 125 two stroke guys who learned it from some Keith Code book or something let me know about running the race in your head with a stop watch and trying to get close to your lap times just sitting there going through it.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
I listen to music made before most of you were born, on my cassette tape Walkman, while I shuffle my walker towards my bike.
OK, maybe some Tonic, Screaming Blue Messiahs, Heretix and dancehall, too.![]()

Cassette tape Walkmans I'm familiar with... my first tape was ZZ Top's Eliminator that I used to listen to constantly on my walkman... 8-tracks were around, but I had nothing to do w/those... Funny thing about this thread is that it's showing that alot of racers go for the mellowing out before a race rather than getting crazed out on adrenaline and aggression. I like a little adrenalin primer but I can see the smooth is fast type thing. If I tried listening to some mellow shit I'd be waving everyone by and taking in the sights.

I pray for a safe race.
Ok is anyone else familiar the songs in the original post? I wasn't so I youtubed them.
I am all for music pre-race but that "music" is beavis and butthead meets spinal tap.
It would explain alot of the red flags though.
It seems you would would want something that flows with a rythm like a racetrack or a smoothrunning bike. Not a geargrinding. rod throwing. metal on pavement crash sound.
Like they say there is no accounting for taste.

If you had to google Iron Maiden there is something wrong w/you dude! Heavy metal and motorcycle racing are extremely similar in many ways... Picture a race start. Loud, aggressive, almost chaotic, but underneath all that noise and chaos lies precision and intent... execution of extremely difficult maneuvers, whether on a guitar or a motorcycle. Taste of course is a matter of personal preference, but you will be hard pressed to convince me that any other style of music so perfectly embodies what racing is all about.
Let it be known that over the course of the season I never caused a red flag to come out... that's just absurd to suggest that.
Yeah Smutnick, you should... say what I think you are gonna say... if you're gonna say something about going slow just know that in the first half of my season I won just about every race I entered... after I bumped I'll admit I slowed down a bit, but that was mostly in the effort to conserve myself and bike so I could return next season and start fresh. I saw no point in pushing myself when I lost all my novice points and had no chance at winning anything in am. There will be plenty of good racing for me this season smutty!
