Race Report 4/28/07
GTL.
First race of the year, very rusty.
Get a bad start and drop a lot of places going into turn 1. Was the field thinned out about, I started making some passes and catching up to Mark on his SV who blew by me on the start. Just as I’m getting closer, we get the red flag. Re-Start. About 17 minutes left in the race.
Get a better start this time and am in decent position going into turn 1. I battle back and forth with an SV, just can’t find a way past him. He gets me on the straights and I close the gap by turn 1a each lap. I finally make my move on the outside going towards 11. I’m right next to him and he squeezes me right off the track, I hit the pothole to the right of the curbing, almost lose the front end. I look to my right and there’s an expert going through the grass as well. Only lost 2 positions, back on track. I get to turn 2 and notice I’m getting sprayed by water!? WTF?!? It’s not raining. It’s my radiator cap, it came loose when I hit that pothole. So I had to pit in as to not blow my motor. First DNF of the year.
Got my times to 1:28. Happy with that for not being on the track since October.
Got the 17 min practice tomorrow morning and then Production Twins. I’ll be happy if I can get down to 1:26 on the first weekend.
Production Twins.
After deciding to go with the DOT’s for the race, I grid up on the second row behind Conor Joyce. Get a good start and am 4th into turn 1 behind Charlie Tarna. Tom Joyce slips past me before turn 3. I battle back past Tom going into turn 6 on the inside. I start to make ground on Charlie, Pete, and Clayton. Then next thing I know I see Pete’s bike on the ground outside of turn 11. I put my head down and catch and pass Charlie coming out of 4 into 5. I hold that position for a couple laps until I get stuck behind a motard. Charlie manages to get past both me and that motard and then opens up a gap. I keep trying to get the motard on the inside of turn 2 but I just don’t think he sees me and I back off 2 laps in a row, allowing Tom Joyce and Conor Joyce to both pass me. Now we have 3 ex500’s going into turn 3. Three wide in the braking chute, Tom to my inside, Conor to my outside, Conor runs it wide and I tuck in underneath him at the apex. I see him hit the curbing out of the corner of my eye ( I didn’t realize he had supermanned himself of the bike until after the race.) I try my best to catch Tom, He passes the start line a split second before me on lap 6. Coming up to turn 5, red flags! Race over. I was relegated to 3rd place. I’ll take it.
Now it’s time to regroup and get back out there to work on turn 6 (my weakest turn).
Good stuff man. That 3 wide into 3 sounds like a interesting moment!
Conor needs to take a chillpill or something. Poor kid seems like he's got big gravity magnets in his bike...
Boston --> San Diego
i missed 2nd place by .01 seconds.
Time to hit the gym and lose a couple pounds
Nice Mike! You had some real shitty luck this weekend with the bike and everything. Its nice to see all your hard work pay off with a wood for your mantle.
Thanks again for all your help this weekend too. Can't thank you enough. Stressed out beyond belief trying to get in for at least one race, and you shone through. I owe you many many beers.

no problem Alex, DNF does the same for everyone in the Pits.
You racing in two weeks with us? or do you have motard races?
