Does everyone actually torque their rear sprockets to 72 ft. lbs.? This seems really excessive to me. I've been trying to stick to that spec. all season, but in the process I've actually stripped a couple of studs right out of the cush drive. My mechanic swears up and down that the amount of torque needed is far less because the nuts are lock nuts anyway, and that 72 ft. lbs. is ridiculous. What does anyone think?

Exactly what I have been thinking all season. Wanted to keep it around 50 but don't want to kill myself if for some reason someone on here did that and said there was a good reason for the overkill torque.

I just Zap it with the impact gun and Never had an issue....
Yes this is a known issue with the R6, tourque scec is way high for the rear sprocket. You will be fine with 50-60lbf. And if any of the studs are damaged, replace them as soon as possible.
That seems like it would be the case. If you actually try to torque them to spec, you can just tell it's ridiculous overkill. What's funny is whenever I remove pretty much any other nut on this bike that was installed by the factory, they all seem like weren't tight enough to begin with. They almost fall off. Really inconsistent.

It's a known misprint in the 04-6 R1 service manual as well. It lists 72ftlbs when in fact it should be 28ftlbs.
I would guess but would not assume that it is the same for the R6.
