I have a persisitent small oil leak that I just can`t seem to find. So far I have relaced a hose and oil cooler which I know had a leak in after I ran over something in the road. Now the oil leak left is just barely leaking but blowing around accross the bottom of the engine. I`m thinking of using the automotive dye designed for detecting hard to find leaks. Has anyone used this on a bike motor. Whats the + /- on doing this? Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Sounds similar to what happened when my valve cover gasket failed.

1997 ZX11. I`m thinking its either the oil pan on the right side or the oil seal on end of the balancer shaft which I have to split he engine cases to repair. Guess what I`m hopeing the dye will tell me.
Another way is to spray foot spray (the white powderized kind) in the gasket or seal you suspect is leaking.
Spray it on a clean dry, surface them let the bike run or ride it. If its leaking it will show up in the powder as brown.
great idea!
Good luck, when you said bottom of the engine I just assumed it was the front. The foot powder idea is killer though!
If it is the balance shaft seal, you typically do not need to split the case to replace it. Simply drive a pair of drywall screws into the seal, 180 degrees apart and tug it out with pliers. Press/tap the new one in with a deep socket.
