690SM speedo issue

the speedo on my 07 690SM has become erratic and inaccurate in its display as of late. at steady speed it jumps around at varying speeds and not displaying anything close to what im actually doing. last night i was 5th gear, 4k rpms...17 mph, then 11, then 23. you get the idea.
i can see that the speedo pick up is down by the front wheel on the left near the caliper.
and according to the dealer, there is a magnet in the rotor (?) that the pick up senses. i dont see it. i called another dealer today and they were no help either.
ive also tried a few other forums and have got no responses

now i assume that the pick up is bad and needs to be replaced, but im not one to just throw parts at a problem. especially when that part is $65-70. ive looked through my repair manual but cant find any tests or specs on the subject.
anyone have any experience on this?
ive tried using the google machine but it just keeps bringing up peoples faulty speedometers which im not convinced is the issue.

Is it a digital speedo? If so it is not th pickup. The vibes eventually beak some of the pins on the circuit board. You can go in and solder a fix before it gets too bad

ya, its digital. the display is fine, just inaccurate.

Hmmm, still think it's vibration damage to the pins. I repaired my 690 speedo 3 times.

If what Paul is saying is true, crappy solder joints are known for intermittent weirdness in many a electronic gadget.

Otherwise, I'd be surprised if that bike didn't use the same magnet they all use in the front wheel, which is like $5.

i cant find a magnet either on the bike or in the fiche

ok. ill pop it off and see what i can find. any hints as to what to look for?

The shiny silver pins that mount the rectangular electronic doohicky to the flat green whatchamacallit.
