Hello everyone...
I've noticed that while riding my Street Triple RS that when I shift from 1 - 2 or 2 - 1 and I hit neutral instead. I would pull the clutch back in and shift.
However that shift is very loud compared to a proper shift.
Can this be a problem? Transmission?
The louder shift can happen in either direction. I don't want to damage my transmission as that is a costly repair I do not need
If that is semi normal, any ways to help smooth that shift out if it does happen again?
Sounds normal to me.
When you're in gear, every spinning part in the transmission is spinning. When you go to Neutral some of those parts stop spinning (or at least they slow down)... but the bits attached to the front sprocket and drive train keep going, being spun by their respective power sources.
When you get it back into a gear, the parts that stopped start spinning again and everything gets reconnected, so what you're feeling with that "clunk" is the spinning bits re-engaging the non-spinning (or slower spinning) bits and matching speeds.

Skip to about 2 minutes in for a visual. Each time he goes into a new gear by hand he momentarily puts it into a false neutral and you can see that some bits stop turning.

btw, thank you for asking this question because it made me think about it a bit more. I knew that what you were experiencing was normal & I was pretty sure that I knew why, but this helped me confirm what I thought I knew and I was able to find a video that clearly demonstrated it for me.

Thanks, I remember seeing a similar video but not as details on Youtube..
I always thought even if the clutch pulled in the gears would still rotate from fluid drag of the oil.
They do usually keep spinning a bit as you can kinda see in some parts of the vid, but they're not all locked in like they are when the bike is in gear so there's going to be some speed differential when they re-engage. That's what you're feeling, that "impact".
Perhaps saying they "stopped" spinning is misleading. They may stop, but those that don't will be spinning more slowly.

It is definitely a disheartening noise. The best way to minimize is to go up a gear instead of down when it happens. You still get the noise, but the spinning parts have less leverage on the non-spinning parts. At least that's how it works in my brain.
Just like bump starting - smoother in a higher gear than a lower gear.

First you screw, then you bolt.
You shouldn't be finding neutral that often. Either shift harder or make sure you're letting the shifter return to detent after each shift.
Not sure if it was just mental, but the FJR would "feel" more of a clunk when the oil was due for a change. Also, make sure you're not lazy shifting the lever. R1 loves to catch neutral when I'm short shifting 1-2, usually in front of people.
I was going to say the same. If you're hitting neutral a lot, it's probably time for an oil change. I basically stopped tracking mileage between oil changes, now I change the oil as soon as the transmission feels the slightest bit different. This usually results in me changing oil 2-3k.

I've changed the oil back 1500 miles ago (give or take a hundred).
I would not think it would need it again. I do think it is more the lazy shifting... I have a quick shifter that I am used too and maybe I dont shift assertive enough from 1 - 2 or 2 - 1.
It happens maybe 3 or 4 times when riding around the streets for a couple hours.
