    Chain issue.. Help!

    Hello all,

Recently had a post about strange noise at low rpms, I deleted that one since it didn't have a lot of information and I assume that hence it didn't gather any replies.

The recent development is that I can hear some clanking sound for every say 20 feet when I push my bike (engine switched off). So, I'm guessing that either the rear wheel is misaligned or that the chain is toast. I still need some advice as the bike is currently at a friend's place and I need to know if it's safe for me and for my bike to ride it while it makes this odd and annoying noise to take it to the nearest mechanic to be looked at. Thanks in advance guys.

    Update:

Yes Jimmy helped me with my chain and I'm not sure if it's the chain that's causing the issue as he helped me get it in perfect alignment. But then again I'm not sure if something else is screwed up on the bike as it started to do this when I pushed it to 90mph on the highway (also another possible cause listed below).

    Bike: SV650
    Year: 08
Location: Brookline MA (But the bike is currently @ njsrikar's place. He was helping me out with the oil change.)
Possible Cause: Almost dropped the bike the same day this BS started. Almost as in I simply very lightly (my right leg which took the entire 400 pounds of weight and barely made it can attest to this) laid it to the side with no damage (or at least that's what I think) as I was on a slope, thought I had the side stand out and I lost balance when I turned around like an idiot. I remember reading on the forums a while ago that it's not good to ride a bike once you lay it down to the side so I waited for 15 minutes before I restarted the bike. Not sure if that helped at all.

I say seeing you are mechanically challenged. Bring the Bike to someone who will be willing to listen to it with you, show you what it is and show you how to do basic motorcycle maintenance. I've seen plenty of people here on NESR offer such services. I believe Jimmy2shits helped you with your chain a little bit ago. So are you sure it's the chain? maybe the chain guard is misaligned and hitting the chain.....

    Re: Chain issue.. Help!

    Look at your chain.

Check the amount of free play, there should be a specification listed and how to measure it in your owners handbook.

Also look at the condition of the sprockets. Sharp pointy teeth with deep wide valleys for the chain mean a worn sprocket.

    For example:

Top sprocket, good. Bottom sprocket, BAD.

Also look to make sure all your links have the rollers (tubes that sit on the sprocket face in between the teeth), and all the side plates.

And finally, put in your location. If people knew where you lived, they might be able to stop by and help you pretty easily.

a stretched/damaged master link on the chain can cause what you're describing. the link doesn't smoothly mesh with the sprocket and the sound is heard when the link drops back onto the teeth.

a master link is the removable chain link that allows a chain to connect back to itself. it looks similar to this:

    Edit:

Currently the bike is in Quincy. I'll hopefully get it home in a day or two. Thanks for all the advice.

@Jim: I am going to get a DID chain like you asked me to if it turns out that the chain is toast (it most probably is). I just hope nothing else is wrong with it.

Just make sure that DID chain has a rivet master link. If not, buy one for $7.

i think all DIDs come with rivet type now.
im not a fan of the rivet type. i always seem to over tighten them and i end up with 1 stiff link in my new chain.

Thanks Ted. That would be awesome. Although, I am wondering if I should ride the bike home while the bad chain / something is scraping against something else. I am wondering if I can pay anyone from NESR to pick up the bike from njsrikar's place and inspect/fix it for me.

I recently got a DID chain for my dual sport and it was a clip master link, but it is only a 428 chain so maybe the bigger ones are different
