    Frame Repair

My KZ has a small crack in the bottom of the frame due to ice damage, now that I am getting it down to the frame, I'd like to get it fixed. Can someone recommend a good welding/frame shop?

My local welder will do it....but I don't really trust that he won't warp the metal a little bit. I figured a dedicated frame shop would be better.

    Thanks in advance!

PS, the whole frame is tubular steel.

    Re: Frame Repair

Is it severed or just cracked? Doubt you have to worry too much about it warping... I also doubt anyone would put it in a jig regardless of where you bring it. I'd rather it was TIG welded, but other than that I'd just throw a bead on it. I happen to know a guy who lives right down the street who could help you out

    Re: Frame Repair

Regardless, its an older bike so I'd like to get the frame checked for straightness. Though its probably cheaper to have it welded at a welding shop and then checked for straightness at a frame place.

If you really do know someone who is competant, I'd be interested, for a reasonable fee of course.

I make a joke (I can TIG weld it for you). Should take all of 8 minutes.

    Re: Frame Repair

Hahaha sorry, I thought you meant down from you. I blame the lack of inflections of text!

Bikes in Milford, MA, so it may be a while before I get it up to Lowell.

Also, I'm not looking to have the crack welded shut, like you would on an aluminum sportbike frame. I'd like to have the section cut out and a new piece of tube welded in its place, its maybe a 1 inch crack, but it's from ice pressure so the crack ballooned out longitudinally. The area has also started to rust and I'd rather play it safe and get some extra reinforcement in there.

Maybe try Pioneer Automotive on River Rd in Hudson, NH.

Not exactly sure if they'd do the job for you but it's worth it to at least ask. The work they've done for me (and others) has always been outstanding.

if its cracked an inch i would think that other connecting frame tubes have moved as well. But if its sliced and completely detached, maybe not.

That frame probably wasn't straight from the factory. I wouldn't worry about that. If it looks straight, and the wheels are in alignment (check with the string method), then it's straight enough.

Peter Kates May weld it for you. It's well known that he can weld water. Plus he's only in Bellingham which isnt too far from you.

I think it cracked due to ice freezing inside of it, it was kept outside during winter the year before I got it. Hopefully that means any connecting tubes are still good.

I didn't think it would get put on a jig, but I figured there will be some warping regardless, figured a good frame guy would know how to minimize it.

Keep in mind I have 2 messy acetylene welding jobs under my belt...thats it.

    Re: Frame Repair

I say we post about it 100 more times, you reply 99, then search the internet 4 billion times.

Then when all is said and done you go see Mr. Trick Photo and then post 35 times about how great a job he did and how happy you are.
