09 ex500, bike won't Start outside of nuetral even with the clutch engaged. Is this a safety feature or a maintnance problem?

There's a kickstand switch that, depending on the bike, either A.) cuts off the bike if it's in gear and senses the kickstand is down (which is usually the case) or B.) disables the starter.
Probably not your problem though as I think kawi goes with option A as that's what most manufacturers do.

A lot of bikes require being in neutral to start, regardless of clutch position. I have a friend with an '09 ex500 and I'm pretty sure his is the same way.
I personally prefer my suzuki's method which allows starting in any gear (if the kickstand is up), as long as the clutch is pulled. That way I don't have to find neutral if I manage to kill it in traffic...![]()

My Triumph will start in any gear with clutch in and kickstand up.
It will only start in neutral with the kickstand down.
If I have the kickstand down, start the bike, clutch in and put it in gear, the engine dies.
