Anyone ever try a Ducati tach on a G1 SV?

I posted this up on SVRider, but there is some SV wisdom here as well. Is anyone using an alternate tach on their G1 SV?

I've been through a few aftermarket tachs, two different Sunpro models and my current tach is a GlowShift.

They all work fine at first, but eventually, they all seem to get "confused" and the needle bounces all over the place. Since this is a race bike, I now only use it for the RPMs when I start. Thankfully, it works properly for that.

Since most Ducatis are twins, has anyone tried using one of their tachs on a G1 SV? If so, what were the results?

One comment on the needle bouncing, I have attempted to clean up the signal as best as I can. I have installed noise filters and made sure that the signal wire and ground used on the tach are clean wiring. I even wrapped the signal lead to isolate it from any signal noise.

The sportbike tach would be difficult since it has a single plug from the wiring harness for everything on the gauge cluster. Not sure you could even make that work. Plus modern sportbike clusters are pricey as eff.

Was thinking an older tach from eBay possibly.

The older ones that I have dealt with were cable driven off the front wheel.

For the tach? I've seen speedometers run from the front wheel (G1 SVs are set up this way).

Re: Anyone ever try a Ducati tach on a G1 SV?

One plug or two, it doesn't really matter so long as you can remove the pins themselves, reorganize them and they'll fit into the replacement cluster. I replaced the stock cluster on my TL1000S with one from a 2001/2002 (can't remember the year) GSXR1000 gauge cluster by simply moving pins around. The only thing that I needed to do extra was wire up and program a microcontroller to handle the data stream for temperature readout.

I'm sure it won't be quite that easy with each application, but if you can get a pinout of the SV and the donor cluster, it's probably a lot easier to see if it will work.

I only need a tach and I want it to be cheap. The ZX7 posted was interesting.

Huh? Was this in English? A little over my head, since I'm not great with a bike's electrical systems.

That is not a ZX7 tach Chuck. The dummy lights are from a ZX7. Tach is aftermarket.

Not really sure. If the triples that came on the bike were the originals, it's an N.

I'm wondering if it has the full cluster, and which model cluster it has. If it is an S model, it has the exact same cluster/plug that my TL had which means that an 01/02 GSXR 1000 cluster is pretty much a direct swap. At least that's what it seems like judging by the pictures I've seen.

Have you done anything to mitigate vibration in your mount? The stock cluster for my "s" version had rubber mounts on the rear of the cluster. My old hawk was rigid mounted and it bounced around at the higher rpm's due to the vibration. Is that what you're seeing chuck?

Are you using the GlowShift HEI filter currently? Have you tried tossing a resister in the pickup line?
