Just got my forks revalved with Ohlins from Dan Kyle racing in Cali. I've only looked it over real quick but noticed that the dust seals on the forks were not replaced. I sure hope they replaced my fork (oil) seals that's behind it.
I am going to call them to ask them if they did even though it seems really idiotic to spend $700+ on revalving forks and not spend an extra $20 to replace the seals.
I'm doubt they'll take it back to do those seals. Also they took 3 weeks to get these forks done after multiple "the'll be done tomorrow" when I called them.
RC51s already have enough problems blowing fork seals so I want to try not to add to that.
Anyways, just wondering where I can buy like a sock that I can wrap around the bottom of the fork shaft to protect it from dust. I can probably make one but figure I'll ask first.
PS: serioust WTF Dan Kyle!

Dust seals don't do a whole lot (especially seal anything...). I would not worry about it. What you want to do is protect the forks from front impact with stones and such. These are great for that: http://www.wunderlichamerica.com/mot...e/8160177.html My bike came with protectors like that and 12 years/99,000+ miles later, my oil and dust seals are still original and don't leak at all.
Just called them.they said they don't replace them unless they're leaking or the customer requests it to be replaced. I wish they had asked me because I would not think twice on giving them the go ahead and obviously pay for it. The dust seal is visibly cracked too!

So did they replace the fork seal at least
On the positive side replacing the dust seal isn't all that hard if you have the forks off.
On the negative side replacing the dust seal is no work if you have it off anyway.
I guess it just means you need to be explicit with your order. This is one of the reasons I prefer to do my own work, even in cases where I don't know what I'm doing. At least I know what was done.
I agree, what's an extra $20 added into the price to just change it from the get go. I don't think people would balk at that.
If I got the forks like that, I'd be livid. Sucks swifty, I feel for you. Let me know if you want to change the seals, I have a Honda RC-51 service manual and will lend a hand.

30 seconds to replace dust seals? Am I missing something?Originally Posted by stoinkythepig
First dust seals are not normally replaced unless there is obvious signs of deterioration. Second to replace those on the RC51 fork and all inverted forks you need to take apart the entire fork unless you have some magic wiper. Third why did you send your forks across the country when you could have just brought them to us in Bellingham?
Now if they didnt replace the oil seal then I would be a bit mad. Those always get placed leaking or not once the fork comes apart.
They didn't replace the dust seals AND the fork seals. One dust seal looks fine, and the other has 10 cracks around the circumfrance. Obviously I can't see how the fork seals are doing. I just know they at the moment they're not leaking.
I sent them to Dan Kyle because they are supposeidly *THE* place to get Ohlins valving for RC51 forks. Something to do with modifications needing to be done to existing parts.
No I'm debating if I shoud get the seals done now before install or wait until they start leaking to replace them. grrr wtf

One thing that's for sure is they will do the job right, no matter how much it might potentially cost.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
Sorry, linky no worky. Try looking up "Fork Protectors saver with zipper-red ducati" on ebay and you'll see what im talking about
Friend: man riding this really hurts my balls
Me: Well you're not supposed to sit on your balls!
Actually if you look a lot of AMA and MotoGP teams don't run dust seals also......

The more I think about it, the more it's pissing me off. Aside from telling me "it'll be done tomorrow" for a week and a half, they couldn't call me and ask me if I want to install new seals for $38.25 on top of the $900 I've already dropped on one order. And the guy gives me an attitude and tells me that I didn't ask for new seals! Now I just got a quote of $350 from GBM to install new seals for forks that's off the bike.
SERIOUSLY WTF!

Just another reason to not assume something will be done when dealing with any service business. You need to tell them exactly what you expect and get it in writing.
That's crazy, I'd be pissed. The dust seals...no big deal. I've re-built my forks many times and have never replaced the dust seals. But not replacing the fork seal is ridiculous.
Like has been said, if you're going to pay someone to do your shit, pay the local boys at GMD. PK doesn't mess around and you can rest easy knowing it's been done properly.
Zoran at TWF in Nevada is also a good reputable source if you don't mind shipping stuff around the country.
