Page 150, the chapter on oils and lubricants is a good place to start.
He does quote Wiseco Piston engineers as stating "run it to red line without load" (dyno), at the same time he is telling you these specialized race parts are ground to a higher finish not found in retail machines.
This chapter should explain why not to use car oil in your bike.
Good luck bro.
Key work here is GROUND..... Geeez, didn't I say that?
You would be amazed at the condition of some so called "Brand New" Engines I've seen.... Bores meet the required tolerances, but "Barely"...thus the long suggested break- in periods.
Tighter manufacturing tolerances means higher costs...
So if they can get away with a so so engine tolerance, and it works, so be it....
Too old to rock and roll, too young to die.
We're not worthy, oh great one!!
My cylies or nik-lined stockers. she was broke in; not above recomended rpm (much), and plenty o' heat cycles.
Once you go long, you can't go wrong!!

I ain't no petrochemical or mechanical engineer-- so I can't judge its validity-- but I read a pretty convincing piece a coupla years ago (complete w/ lotsa burn tests & chem. analysis) that said that recent developments in auto oils made them suitable for bikes... some were even "better" than bike-specific blends. wish to hell I could remember where I saved it...
so, y'all wizards out thar: is this bullshit?![]()
WWSD? (what would Sneakers do?)

Motorcycle Consumer News did a great article on this a while back. Ran all kindsa tests too. If I remember (my memory SUCKS!), the Mobil 'bike specific' stuff was wunna the high scorers, along with Castro. There were a coupla high end (READ: EXPENSIVE), smaller brands that scored even higher. I wasn't impressed with the score of the oil I USED TO use either (Golden Spectro Synth Blend)...
Oh yeah, break in. I ride it a bit harder than the manufacturer recommends. Vary the RPM's a lot, use the gear box a lot, use your engine's breaking, and attention to heat cycles, and DO NOT 'load' the engine (chugging at low RPM's in higher gears), and don't leave 'er at a certain RPM for too long. Always worked like a charm for me...
(I've had more dirty bikes than streetbikes in my life, but I've used the same method for both and I've had great results)
