help diagnose my friends bike please. it's an 04 r1. it started up 1 week ago though needed a little throttle to start. 2 days later it cranked but would not start and sounded like the battery was dying. charged the battery overnight & today, the dash goes on & cycles, hit the starter and zero crank & check engine light flashes everytime i hit the starter. head lights & horn does does not go on. only the standby lights & directionals works. tried another battery that i know is fully charged and 100% functional & it did the same thing. i'm not familiar with this particular bike & will look into the service manual to possibly pull a code but hopefully someone would know from nesr. i read on the r1 forum that the 04-06 R1's have bad stators. what do you guys think??

Stator and battery. Replace both.
I had an 04 R1 and it did exactly what you are describing when the battery shit the bed. The one thing I've learned about these newer batteries is, they can be bad and still read and take a full charge. Also if they run low or go dead more than once, save yourself the hassles and get a new one.
And if I recall, the headlights don't turn on until the engine starts? I could be off a couple model years on that one though.
Yamaha
the weirdest thing. it finally cranked and started but u need to give it some throttle. without throttle it did not crank & check engine light goes on. would a stator replacement fix the weird start issue? i just want to make sure before he goes & replace the stator & or battery.
Check the stator via the FSM that will tell you if its bad right off.

Do you have a multi-meter? Check the resistance readings across the stator. Is it a 3 wire or 2 wire stator? When it's running, check input voltage to the rectifier (it'll be coming from the stator to the rectifier). Then, check your voltage output from the rectifier (itll be going to the battery). And post!
Friend: man riding this really hurts my balls
Me: Well you're not supposed to sit on your balls!
