ok, so I stalled the bike after it 12-o-clocked and I cut the throttle, and ever since then the XR80r won't stay running
bear in mind the bike is warm: it will start just fine, but within 30 seconds or heavy throttle, it will stall
if I try to start it right after it stalls, it won't start
if I try to start it after a few mins, it will start just fine, then stall after 30 seconds
I'm guessing it's not getting a constant flow of gas or it has a float issue. Should I take apart the carbs, soak/clean it with a carb cleaner, disassemble it and make sure all the parts are working, then (if necessary), replace the fuel filter?
the gas switch is on "on", and I tried reserve
what else could be wrong, and how can I fix it?
tap the carbs with a hammer not hard but you may have stuck the Float....if it sat prior to this this may also be a factor also...if it still does it rip it off and clean it.

ok, so I tapped the carbs with a rubber mallet and tried kick starting it again with the same results (stall after 10 seconds or so)
I tried rapping it a little harder and got the same results
So I tried rapping it while kickstarting it and I was able to get it to run for a little bit longer until it ran on its own. Then I put it in gear, rode it to the driveway, and it stalled.
My guess is the tapping is breaking the float loose, but it's not seated in the correct position, or it gets stuck repeatedly
any other suggestions before I pull off the carbs and start poking around?

Another possibility is that when you 12 o'clocked it you dislodged a bunch of sludge in the fuel tank and now you aren't getting any flow through the petcock. Thus it runs for a while but the engine dies of fuel starvation.
I'd disconnect the fuel line and check that it flows OK into a jar before I pulled the carbs.

I checked the fuel line and it flowed pretty freely, thanks for the tip
I then took apart the carb and found the pin that the float was hinged on was only seated on one side, so I slid it back into the other side and it works like normal again
I spent a good 1-1/2 hours sliding around in the snow too
thanks guys
