anyone have experience with what happens, when you don't follow protocol?
I got an OEM #'d battery from Autozone.
I filled the battery with appropriate acid levels, but only waited 5 minutes (instead of 1 hour) before putting it on a battery tender. It was on the tender for a total of 30 minutes when I rolled it out of the garage and started the bike (it started just fine) and rode to Boston from the Worcester area. I let it sit outside the club for 3 hours and came back where it started just fine. I then rode back, and now it's back on the tender until I ride it again.
Did I just drastically reduce the life of the battery?
Even so, damn was it worth it to get out there (especially tonight)
...well, minus the near-low side at the mass pike entrance
you're screwed!

Dude!!!
That's like trying to stick it in without foreplay.
You might get screwed later, but it's not a definite.

Lubrication is for wussys
and ted apparently
But seriously if something says wait an hour its probally there for a reason. Sort of like why i didnt take my bike in for the break in service after 50 miles...

Just stay on the bus routes.
you probably reduced it's overall capacity somewhat , but not very much.

The time for the acid 20 + minutes is just to give the
Glass mat time to absorb and settle.

True.
All true.
well, in retrospect I must've been too excited to ride, for the first time this season, that I cared
meh...it works...I'll re-post in 2-5 years with the update![]()
well, 2 years is long enough, eh?
here's my report:
if I let the bike sit one month, the battery does die down. It doesn't die *completely*, it just cranks slower than usual. Problem is, she's an old girl (17 years and running!), with 40k+ miles, and the valves haven't been touched for over 32k+ miles....so while it didn't start without the battery tender on it for an hour, it's hard to say if it's the battery, or just quirks of an old bike
I let the bike sit overnight after starting it, and the next day the battery was green and good to go

Solar cell with a float circuit, auto stores sell them for vans that sit for long periods of time. You'll need to cut the cigaret lighter plug off and either sacrifice a batt tender lead set for the plug or make your own harness. Sun is out, batt is getting juice.
Also, find out what's causing it to drain down when the key is off, may be a short just starting to announce itself.
