    Sharskinz Repair

OK so my new-to-me track bike has experienced a few too many love taps and so I need to do some serious fairing repair. Since Sharkskinz are epoxy based, I was gonna avoid the polyester based el cheapo "Bondo fiberglass repair kit" and instead get some cloth and some West Systems epoxy resin -- I've used this stuff before on other projects and it's great to work with, really tough and flexible.

My question though is what weight of fiberglass cloth I should get from the boat store to repair the damage -- 4 ounce? 6 ounce? I gave Sharkskinz a call and the woman answering the phone didn't know... Then when I asked her if she could find out she said, "well... we don't like to give out that kinda information."

I suppose in the end it won't really matter a whole lot, but it would be nice to get the right stuff before I do all this work...

I use aerospace grade fiberglass straight from one of my clients (can't use any names). The fiberglass is used on propellar blade spars. I can attest its probably the strongest fiberglass your ever going to use. My bike's got it, friends Duc has it and Jerzee's SV has it... Strength wise its phenomonal, looks wise... well... it finishes up so good people like Chad make fun of us. If you want some I'll give you some for free (local pickup) else I'll ship you some for priority shipping cost (envelope): $4.10 With all the talk of this sport being expensive, this is the least I can do.

Wow thanks for that offer. I might take you up on that, although I'm not sure I want to rob your stash of the exotic stuff since I just need to do a bunch of small patches. I was really just wondering if anyone knew what weight cloth the Sharkskinz guys used originally.

Think what I'll do is take the tailpiece over to West Marine and compare it to what they sell (fiberglass cloth is usually really cheap). If everything they sell is really different, maybe I'll send you a PM. Thanks again.

Sure no problem. I can tell you this... I have enough "new" fiberglass to mold probably hundreds of full sets of bodywork, so don't worry about putting a dent in my stash. I used to pull the scraps off the production line and it would serve me plenty. Then the guys starting cutting me sheets off the roll. And then I hit the jackpot. I got an entire roll for myself and another for my Duc friend. So really... you pay the shipping, I'll send you what you want. As for everyone else, the offer ends here. I apologize, but I'm not in the charity business. As for you JoeSwamp, first come first serve.

Can I be in on this too? My body work got a bit rashed last year, so some repairs are in order.

How much do you need? I have some random slices in a bag that I've been using. I'm sure it'll suit your needs just fine. Let me know...

Being new to glass repair I really don't know. Not much is my guess though. Pretty much enough to do some repairs and possibly to build a battery box. I'll pm you with my e-mail.

My roll isn't open yet and I'd rather not open it. However, the bag of stuff I've been using has enough to fix your rashed up sections. As for the battery box... I don't know... what are you putting it on. I'm trying to visualize this... if its only a tray your making it probably won't be too bad and I could probably take care of you. If your making an entire undertray... your probably talking a lot of fiberglass.

The bat box is just a tray to fit inside of the orginal one. I'm using a smaller battery this season, but I don't want to have it ejecting in a crash!
