I know it may be a stupid question, but here goes anyway...
What will happen if I go up one tooth on the rear?
What about two up in the rear?
One up or down in the front?
Answers I'm looking for are better gas mileage, better torque(pulle harder), faster top speed, and or this is what I did and WHY...
Down in front=up in rear
1 down in front is roughly the equivalent to two up in the rear.
Don't go below 14 teeth in the front.
If you go above 2 up onthe rear you may need a longer chain.
If you go one down on the front or two up on the rear(or both) the stock chain will probably work.
If you go down on the front make sure you have good swingarm clearance.
Down on the front(or up on the rear) will:
Increase your rpm for any given gear.
Provide more torque in every gear.
Decrease your mpg in every gear(higher rpms)
Reduce your top speed.
Make wheelies easier.
Down on the rear (or up on the front) will:
Increase your mpg.
Decrease rpms in every gear.
Increase your top speed.
Decrease the torque available in every gear.
NO ONE DOES THIS.
The most common is one down in the front and two up on the rear.
Front sprocket cost: $17
Rear Sprocket cost: $45
Thinking of trying this on your bike?
Go down one on the front---try it $17 investment. Want more?
Buy that rear sprocket. Hate it? Switch the front back. (you won't)
Dat help?
I agree with Jim somewhat... except, the ratio is closer to 1 tooth in front = 3 teeth in rear (on an SV anyway stock is 15F 45R exactly 1:3)
second... yes peeps do go up in front... I have gone to 16 in front, I found the Sv had adequate torque for my needs and going up in front keeps me in a lower gear and reduces my shifting.. but after a while, I decided that my gearing was a bit too tall, so I added one in rear and went to 46, this required adding 2 links to my chain.. now my gearing is right where I like it. because the additional 2 teeth barely required the additional 2 links, it also extended the effective length of my swingarm which also improved the handling to my liking a little bit

power wheelies now . flip the rist strait up changed from 2:73 - 2:94. 3:00 or so is a good sport bike final gearing
depending on the bike & what your looking for
ps my bike still gets 40 mpg

Personally, I wouldn't go DOWN with the front. Not that it matters much, I just wouldn't. If you're looking for more low end punch without sacraficing too much top end, I'd to two UP on the rear. Which may require a coupla extra links on the ol' chain...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
It been said before and it'll be said again, you guys (everyone I met so far )are the (put a sappy word here ) FUCKING BALLS, and for the ladies you are THE BOOBS![]()

If you race your bike, always go up on the back, never go down on the front. If you think that you can gear to increase top speed, chances are the gear ratio you have stock won't pull redline in 6th anyway. With the exceptions of a couple open class 1000's and 1300's, but they are limited electronically.
here's a little tip...
Wanna double your speed? You need 4 times more HORSEPOWER to do it.
