I just found out about caliper press/spreader tools. I always used a C-clamp or wedged a screwdriver in there to push the piston back. I'm thinking about picking one up but it seems there are a bunch of different ones. I think I would like one small enough for a rear caliper.
Does anyone use them? What do you recommend?
Apiece of flat stock with a hole drilled in the middle with a bolt and nut will work fine. Make a small one for bikes, a big one for cars. You could even make one for dual pistons.
Channel locks.
The problem with c-clamps and other screw type piston pushers is the force multiplication. You cannot always feel the piston is stuck or a hose is partly blocked when you are screwing the piston home. If you squeeze with channel locks, you can feel when there is too much effort.

How about tools to remove pistons? Anything out there that will prevent damage?

compressor. with an air nozzle with a rubber hose on the end. i use different size wedges (sockets) to restrict the movement of the freed piston to allow the stuck piston to move. I'll sue a rag to catch the piston that is going to blow out. DO NOT use your finger to catch it. i can only imaging the pain or finger getting jammed between the caliper housing and piston in some assimilates.
my thoughts on this is if i can not easily press the piston back into it the caliper with you fingers it is time polish the piston. some people will buy new. I still have OE pistons and seals in on most of my bikes. If any seals have a tear, (usually the wiper seal) only then is when i'll replace the ring.

Just pump compressed air into the caliper and the piston will pop out. Or if you're prepared for the mess, uninstall the caliper and pads and pump the lever/pedal until it pops out.

When I rebuilt my Brembos the pistons were not hollow. They had some plastic cover looking thing that I couldn't figure out how to remove. The BMW rebuild kit included new pistons so I didn't mind destroying the old ones. anyone have experience with removing the middle cover of the piston?
