Gonna go pick up the appropriate hole saw today.
Fine tooth saw, fast drill, masking tape over the area to prevent chipping...
Anything else anyone can advise before I cut these pretties? Never done this before.
I'm scared.![]()

just looks too easy. i know it won't go down like that. this guy didn't tape or anything, are his plastics made by tupperware?
i don't have a laser either. i do have play-doh though.![]()

which side would you start on? in the thread i posted the guy cuts from the finish side, but everything else i've read says start on the inside.
and yeah, i got tools to clean up the hole.
that sounds dirty.![]()

Drill the small pilot hole and make sure it will all line up. Start on the inside and go until you have a complete circle from the hole saw, then switch to the outside (which should be taped) and use a scrap of wood on the inside to support the plastic. Good luck.

Laser really aint necessary. What I do is thread the slider's bolt in w/o the slider. Leave the bolt sticking out far enough that it will just barely touch the plastics when installed. Use some paint (or girlfriends lipstick, 'cause it will wipe off the bolt easier) so it will make a mark on the back of the panel. Install plastics carefully, push into the head of the bolt, then remove.
If you're really anal, drill the pilot hole and then re-install plastic. Look thru the hole to verify its lined up with the bolt. If not, you can correct the pilot hole before using the hole saw.
I've read that you should make the hole a bit bigger than the slider. If theres very little clearance, then the slider may crack the plastic if you go down.
I'd second the other tips about drilling from both sides, using wood brace, etc...

yeah so it seems on both sides i have to cut through portions of the plastic mount studs (the studs themselves stay but parts of the bases of them get cut through).
this makes it very difficult to come through the inside, since the hole saw hits all that plastic before i can get to the pilot hole.
and on the right side there is about a 3/4" hole centered over the bolt already, and that makes a shitty pilot hole.i'm thinking about wrapping the center drill of the hole saw with tape until it's about the same diameter as the hole?
the practice fairing looks like shit, let me just say (except where i could just cut thru flat plastic).![]()

Is it really that hard to drill a hole?
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
apparently
like i said, flat areas, no problem... areas with plastic structures behind them, the saw goes nuts.. maybe i need to find finer teeth than i did.

OK - try this... Blue tape over the outside. Mark where the holes have to be drilled using the grease, lipstick, etc. with the transfer method. Drill a small pilot hole to make sure it will line up (check it twice). Secure the wood to the inside of the fairing and start drilling - high speed, low feed, very gentle pressure. When you get close to getting through even less pressure. It might even help to stop every now and then and rub the outside of the hole saw with bar soap to act as a lubricant. Good luck...

you could try running the hole saw in reverse towards the end of the cut
