So for this weekend I rode my friend Glenn's proddy SV and let my friend AJ ride my EX. We ended up getting to the track at about 7:30ish and got the trailer off the truck. We left the dog in the cab with the truck running to keep her cool and were going to get the camper. When we went back to the truck I tried to get in, but the dog had hit the door lock and had locked us out. At this point we were kinda panicking because the rear sliding door was locked and we had no spare keys. I just happened to have 2 metal coat hangers in the back of the truck and we had a load of wood for the fire, so we wedged the door open with the wood and stuck a coat hanger in the door. We finally got it unlocked by hitting the window down button and then the unlock button once the window was down. Mission accomplished...oh wait...this is a race report...uhh onto the racing.
So for practice 1 on Saturday...lets just say that I wasn't feeling the SV at all. It was very twitchy and would turn in VERY easily and quickly. Which is something I was not used to on the EX at all. Like the EX though you had to have the right gear selection or else you were sunk. I found that it pulled good between 6 and 10k.
By the time the second practice rolled around I was feeling much more confident and got down into the 25's. My first race was GTL so I knew I would have a lot more track time to get my lap times to come down.
In GTL I was gridded in the last row because I had crashed out of this race the weekend before. I got a pretty decent start, but ran a 29 for an outlap, so the lead pack was already pulled away. I got passed by one or 2 more people throughout the race and then tagged onto #295. He had pulled away from me, but with a combination of me getting faster and him getting slower I was able to reel him in and make the pass. I held it for the rest of the race and settled with 8th out of 14 with a new PB on the SV of 22.8.
On Sunday I felt much more confident on the SV in practice and was working on technique and body position, mainly where my head is. And I have to thank Pete Gaborio for shutting off my killswitch in the 2nd practice...
My first race on Sunday was race 7, LWSS, which a few RSP guys were also in. I was psyched to run with these guys and my team mate Brian Cooner. Off the line this time I did great and was 3rd going into T1. Brian Cooner got by me and so did BK. Ryan Nolin lowsided in T11A and I avoided it with just a little room to spare. In the 7th lap Pete Gaborio came by me and cut me off in 12...fucker lol. I ended up running in that position until the end of the race and ended up with 5th.
In LWGP I was now motivated to beat Brian, as I had run this race just for the chance to try to beat him. He got a much better start than last time and I think I was 3rd into T1 again. I was able to keep up with them until about lap 5 or 6, when we got stuck behind an expert from the wave in front of us. Cooner got held up a little bit and I was able to catch up to him again. He got around him, but I got stuck behind him for about half a lap. By the time I got around him Cooner had checked out and I just ran my race for the last part. And sorry about the almost getoff that you had Keith. Glad you weren't hurt worse and you kept it upright. I ended up with 3rd place in that race with a best time on the sv of 22.1. Pretty stoked.
I had a great time on the SV and can't wait to get back on it for next weekend. Hopefully more of the RSP guys will be there so more fun can be had! Thanks to all who helped this weekend!
