LRRS 2016 - The Classic — OutOfSpec.COM
Report is live, my keyboard is smoking and I've got two dead bikes in my garage. Don't care, earned points in the top class of a National Pro Series.
Which number on the YZ in the sumo pics???
And did that newer thumper change your mind on running the wreck ever again? 😂
Blue Yamaha with black number plates, white numbers, 875. I'm wearing my silver/white/grey leathers and an MX helmet. Cole was wearing leathers with red in them and a street helmet on the same bike, in case you get us confused.
As far as wreck vs thumper:
At Loudon, it was painfully obvious how much easier the thumper was to ride with that crazy tall gearing. The bike would just pull and pull and pull even from nearly idle, vs the smoker that really wanted to be in the zone to motivate. The thumper handled better on pavement, but that's not a super fair comparison as we hadn't had a chance to dial in the smoker's setup at all and it was still an initial crazy wild guess. Both bikes were unhappy in the corners if allowed to coast. I would have preferred my smoker in the dirt, part of it may be 'not my bike' syndrome making me more timid in the dirt than I would have been?
On the flip side, fuck kicking that diesel pig over. Especially if the bike and rider are both hot. Sometimes the hot start was the ticket, sometimes not, sometimes it wanted a lil throttle, sometimes not. Every time it took effort and energy to heel it over. My smoker, even in high compression config was SO MUCH EASIER in comparison. I'm being told the EFI machines are much better in this regard but I have yet to try one personally. Also, that thumper was noticeably heavier in the pits lifting it on and off the stand. I can pick up my 250 if need be, I had to pivot the 450 on one wheel. Guessing about a 15 to 20lb difference between the two. Didn't notice the weight difference when in the saddle.
The wreck will live to piss off biting insects again. It may not see Loudon save for AMA events, or it may depending on how the new motor build turns out, dunno. I'm hoping for comparable peak power with a much wider spread this time around. If it makes it more friendly with tall gearing cool, if not it'll be my Boxshop / short track mount. First priority is diagnosing the FZR, if money has to be spent that's where it goes before the smoker gets love. I'm also toying with the idea of getting a thumper for LRRS, 'cause damn did I have fun and there was a direct correlation between experimenting on it and going faster on the Fizzer after.

Did I miss something??
Did the YZ blow up too???
nice seeing you on Saturday Josh... I always love seeing what's rolling around in your head.
I sure as hell was. I love ripping around on an upright thing with straight bars like that. The opportunity to do dumb things sans pavement and occasionally send myself into the air only sweetens the pot. I only wish the DRZ were closer to competitive.
I need to go back to boxshop!
ahh found it...done by Cole
stupid dirt bikes constantly blowing up...just had the crank done on the YZ last October and looking at doing a tear down n crank inspection this summer...maybe even put in those WR gears
I thought for sure the 90's smoker club would die with you after you rode a late(r) model 450 doing sumo...they are just so easy n fun n smooth...such a hoot on pavement
@ NHbubba - the way I see it, the 4t/pavement fun you're having is going to be as cost efficient as you can get...imho there will be a significant trade off with cost for mo' powah
