get'n ready to put together my ice tires for the dirty bike this season. This year i thought i'd try my hand at fitting some liners like the pro tires. Anyone have any spent street bike tires kicking around...i'd be glad to take em off your hands....![]()

I've got some completely shot 160's, a 180 or two and maybe a couple of fronts that you could take off my hands for a 6 pack and a back rub. My shoulders have been a little tight lately.

I have plenty of used tires if you want to pick through them. I'm in Bloomfield, Ct.
OP: which size do you use as a liner?
I'm guessing you've got a 21" front and 18" or 19" rear...which street tires don't exactly fill out
Exactly right. I've got a 21" front and a 19" rear. So far i cut up a 17" front and fit it to the rear tire...and of course it doesnt complete the inner circumference of the tire. Larger tires maybe from advernture type bikes or something i'm sure would be better, but since 17" is most common to come by i'm working with what i get. If anyone has done this and has suggestions, i'm listening. For now my plan is to cut a small peice from another tire to fill in the gap in the liner.

You might be able to score a 21 front at a hd shop. Maybe even a 19 front to put on the rear.

I just checked performance cycles in shrewsbury, MA and they have at least two or three 19" enduro tires in their junk tire pile without any knobs on them
here's a sample:
but here's a question: do you really need a 21" liner for a 21" tire? I feel like the tire profile will better dictate how much circumference the outside of the tire will fill up because the larger the profile, the taller the tire, and the larger the overall circumference of the tire will be. A 21" tire just tells you how big the inside of the tire opening is.
take for example this 19" street tire sitting next to a 21" dirty knobbie...doesn't that look like a big enough tire to fit inside?

I guess I figured you were cutting the sidewalls off of the "liner" tires. Why would you need them

yes, that's what I also understood. The sidewalls would get cut off of the "liner" tires, but the issue the OP is having, is that the outer circumference of the liner tire is not enough to cover the circumference of the dirt bike tire
You guys are correct, the sidewalls get cut off but the trick is using a tire with a large enough OD to fill the inner circumference of the DB tire.
Breakdirt, you bring up a good point that i wasnt really thiniking about. Of course the profile would make a difference. Larger profile = larger OD. Thanks. So like you said a 19" street/enduro tire would probably be large enough to fill out my 21"/19" dirt tires. Did you just stop by performace cycle and ask for scrap tire? Are they alright with giving them away?

well, that's just my guess by eyeballing the tires...I think a 19" would be enough to fill out a 21" front tire, and a 17" or 18" tire with a large enough profile could probably fill out the 19" tire
I did ask if they had any junk tires, and I'm pretty sure they don't care about giving them away
are you making the trek?
Yeah, i'm in Mansfield today so i may just take a ride up there.

ok, I'm local and on vacation, so if you're heading there before 4pm, let me know and I'll show you what I mean about the 19" liner tire fitting in the 21" tire

I guess I would attempt it first. If I needed to cut the tire to make it fit I would and then it would either overlap a little or I would just cut off the excess.

Also a 19" front and a 19" rear are obviously going to be way different on width.
