Well the Father-in-law decided that if it did not start for him it was time to get rid of it on the cheap without consulting me. B-stardI maintained this thing for years. All it ever needed was a simple carb clean if it had any problems starting but most of the time a few priming pumps and it fired on the first tug. He also gave away the sled that could be attached to it to haul the firewood around.
It was a mid to late 80's Skidoo Safari Scout. 377cc I believe. It looked exactly like this. It was a twin with a single carb. sooooooo easy to fix it was not funny.
Looking for:
Possible 2 up . the cabin is just of a snowmobile highway Rt 105 & 5 and might enjoy tossing the wife on back and tooling around for 20-30 miles)
Ability to create fresh tracks in 2’-3' of snow (If we don't get up the cabin we can have this much powder)
I like the simple Carb design (1 carb) the sled can sit for a while.
Ability to haul a sled
Short length. yea, I know a 2 up is not quite short in length
Not looking for a battery operated push button start. I don't want to rely on a battery as the sled can sit for months.
A simple work horse. Cruse the trails. Clear fallen debris, haul the fire wood around.
Good wind protection.
Air cooled, NOT Liquid
Used -Cheap-not a lot of repair- Runs
Probably 2T
Light weight
Suggestions, Thougths on what direction i should be looking into.

You are saying that safari made fresh tracks in 3' of powder, are you? Whats your price range? Brand preference?
There was an old Polaris widetrack that sounds like it might be up your alley, but it is probably pretty rare.
Ski doo had a formula s that was EXTREMELY light and nimble, not sure about 2 up on it though.
Im thinking an old indy trail 2 up? 488 fan and pretty bullet proof.
YES, It did but it was a pain in the balls. IT sucked in the deep snow. I would have to keep a decent clip on the trails just to pack it down without Kate. Once i had things established that i could tote Kate around.
seeing the Skidoo has done well for me and this is the only thing i have ridden i guess you could say i'm kind of partial to Skidoo.

I had a Safari 377 in Jr High, out of the crate it did NOT like deep powder, but that was due to the horrible factory track. I eventually got a nice deep lug track on it and the thing would break trail like nobody's business. I also put a set of brackets on to widen the ski stance out 3", just enough to make it ride better on trails formed by more modern machines without killing it's ability to carve through raw forest without issue. Set of mirrors, heated grips, I loved that thing.
Eventually sold it when I went to college as I just didn't have time to ride any more. Miss that beast. I don't think there is a modern equivalent to them any more, all the new sleds are just too damn heavy.

Considering your predilection for A) antique and underpowered stuff and B) Ski-Doo, you probably want an Elan. Small, light, simple, everything is available for it, and it seems like 80% of the ones ever made are still around. It goes where my long track Polaris 340 just sinks. It's no 2 up touring machine, but everything else it can do. Make sure the track is in good shape, that's the high cost item.

I got a either a Polaris or Ski-Doo that probably will fit your needs.

those older LC 'Doos and Polaris NEVER overheated. You needed to get to the 2000+ when they were squeezing every available ounce of HP out of them. I wouldn't disregard them, although I do understand the FC option.
hmm maybe better as i hear there are a number of issued the Polaris 550 motors

Ah... Just found...
The state of New Hampshire does not title Off Highway Recreational Vehicles or snowmobiles nor does it maintain any records of title or liens on these types of vehicles. A title, bill of sale or previous registration is not required to register an Off Highway Recreational Vehicle or snowmobile.
Although a bill of sale is not required to register in New Hampshire, when buying or selling a machine, it is recommended that a bill of sale is completed with the following information included:
1.Date of sale
2.Vehicle year of manufacture
3.Vehicle make
4.Vehicle model
5.Vehicle engine size (cc)
6.Vehicle color
7.Vehicle identification number
8.Seller’s name, address and signature
9.Buyer’s name, address and signature
It is also recommended that a buyer verify the VIN on the bill of sale against the machine itself. N.H. Fish and Game does not verify or give out registration or machine information unless an individual is requesting his or her own registration information.
When a transfer of ownership has taken place, the registration and decals on the machine are no longer valid; the new owner would need to register the machine in their own name.

I thought he was hugging his thumper for a moment there.
Exhaust routing next to operators head looks like it could be improved on.
U kidding me.. that's the latest in russian heat transfer technology.
I now own a new $350 skidoo. Just needs a lil carb love. Only 1200 miles. The frigging cart to haul the wood is going to cost more than the sled.
