Looking for a mens mountain bike. I know a lot of guys have a mountain biking hobby but I'm not looking for a crazy expensive bike. Something cheap to get exersize on and hit some bike trails during the summer. I'm short, so if the bike has a large frame it probably isn't for me.

I stand an intimidating 5’4"
below are a few down your way that look good...try and get a frame with a least an inch or two of stand-over clearance between your junk and the top tube...just getting into it i'd stick with a hardtail as they are typically cheaper as well as having less moving parts that could be worn (if buying used)...i love my hardtail but i haven't been riding in a while due to a lack of time and lack of riding buddies...here is what i'm riding to give you an idea and the trails i ride are really rocky

For a basic bike you might have your best luck going brand new (left over). Giant, Trek, and specialized are three that have decent basic bikes.
Trek 4300 disc - $769 - Hydraulic discs, hardtail, decent front fork.
Giant Revel - $690
Specialized hardrock disc - $520

For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction - and sometimes a scar...
nice!...good luck man...make sure you take it for a test ride and run through all the gears and test out the brakes...make sure you get a somewhat newer bike in case you decide to upgrade the fork...another key thing is make sure it has a replaceable dropout (where the rear durailer bolts on), it will bend this part before bending the frame...i used to ride a chromoly GT outpost with no suspension which wasn't made for what i was doing with it but i rode the tires soft, slimed the tubes and put tire liners in to help prevent flats and tried to ride as smooth as i could...still have that bike but that is now my road bike...it looked like this bike...you can make a cheap bike do a lot all depends how much you want to spend but a suspension fork and a suspension seat post took the edge off the bumps a little

^^this is a good idea as well...see what you can get for prices at a local bike dealer and compare
edit: and try to get one with schrader valves...not a huge deal...can always drill out a presta valve rim and run schraders...i have prestas and i hate them, just haven't replaced them yet

Thats quite a bit more than I'm willing to spend for something that I'm just going to dabble in. I'm just riding for exsersize right now on the street.
I e-mailed the guy selling the one from REI. Marin 17" Hardtail 24 speed. He's gonna let it go for 200$ so right now thats my numero uno. Gonna check it out Wednesday night and make sure I fit and it's functional.

Specialized hard rock disc is a decent bike but for a little more you will got double wall rims. I folded a set of the stock wheels 15 minutes after buying the bike.
2011 ducati 848 evo
2007 gsxr 1000 totaled
2003 cbr 954 sold
2001 cbr 929 sold
2003 rc 51 stolen
1993 cbr 1000 gave to a friend
1990 cbr 600 blew the motor
I have a brand new trek (gary fisher collection) marlin single speed hardtail, upgraded steel for, hydraulic discs, 29" wheeled awesomeness for $500.
I'm going to look at the Marin on Wednesday night, but I'll keep that in mind![]()
Checked out the Marin tonight and bought it. It's in great shape. Shifts and rides nicely, new chain, new tires and I can stand over the frame (which is a success at my height. The bike has disc brakes and shimano compenents. Best part is the guy took 200$ for it. Even though it's a few years old I think it was a good purchase.
sounds like a good deal man...if you need any parts...
