I need at least 1lb of R-12 refrigerant for an old auto AC system. I had the system charged in my 71 chevy, the system takes 2.75lbs, the guy only had 2lbs left and didn't know when..or even if he'd be able to come across more. The ideal thing is to find one of the small containers it came in back in the 70's, I think they were 1 or 2lb containers...or to find someone that has it and can add it to my AC system.
Let me know what you gots

You should be able to just change the fittings and use 134 no?

As a last resort, yes. But everything I've read on the c10 forum, the R-12 works better, and I also upgraded a few parts already that are R-12 specific.Originally Posted by MaRce1o

You can get R-12 substitute through Enviro-Safe. Should be able to add to your existing system, but would want to check on that.
Bump!
It's all over ebay, but I can't buy it without an EPA license.

Finally got this sorted. I called a friend that service my house AC last year, and he had about 30lbs of it. Stopped by today and he topped off the charge (took 3/4lb) and adjusted the pressure switch. Felt nice to drive home in ice cold AC.
Total cost, a case of beer

Glad you got it sorted out.
General question, why is the older stuff preferable?
Less enviro-friendly means it works better?

New stuff doesn't work as well in old systems.

The way my friend described it to me today, it's mostly because of the compressor style and valving sizes in older vehicles. R12 and 134 both work at different pressure settings, which normally isn't adjustable. Mine was adjustable because I put the adjustable switch in it to make the compressor cycle like a newer vehicle, rather than run 100% of the time

Just found a 30lb tank of R-12 in the garage.
Flush it down the toilet before they find you.
