Well, it looks like the shadow will be out of commission for a while now and the nighthawk project may take a bit longer than I thought, So I figured it's about time I'd get a newer bike.
After riding my buddies GSXR600 again the other day, I've kinda caught the sportbike bug. The only thing I didn't really like about the gixxah was the clipons. So I'm gonna probably get a more upright machine.
Here's whats on the list of contenders: Fz6, SV650 (not the "S" model thx), Kawasaki 650r's, 98 and newer VFR's, honda 599's Connie 10's, st1100's hell, maybe even a KLR650.
Fuel injection would be preferred, but carbs would not be a deal-breaker. I'd prefer to stay away from most liter bikes as I'm not really a speed demon.
Budget: around 3k, can't go much higher than that.
And yeah, I realize this is the time of the year when bikes sell for top dollar, but I've gon a month without a bike. I really can't take it any more.
I've seen pics of you. You belong on a klr.

The latter.
Of the list, today, I'd pick the fizzle.

i wouldn't rule out the vtr1000. you don't have to be a speed demon but it gives you the ability to if you want to. plus there are a couple of good condition ones on Craigslist for less than 3k.
I AM BIAS...
I think the bikes that you have picked out for yourself are perfect. Now go find one
PS...the KLR sounds awesome with an exhaust.

great bike for a good price
You might check out ZZR600's too. It's the 00-02 ZX6R just rebadged, which in my experience was just about the perfect balance between sport and comfortable ergos. They're cheap too, and readily available. Carbureted though, that's the only downside really.

nevermind
What about an early 2000s z1000/750?
My roommate has an 04 z1000 and its a real comfortable bike, just a bit heavy, but that's compared to my 675.

Those 599/919s are nice bikes. Cheap to insure too.
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

Keep in mind there are a lot of nice bikes out there in your range. I picked up that mint '95 Vmax for $3300 with a Corbin and nice set of Fieldsheer saddlebags. Ignore CL, hit up forums instead.

Well, I just got back from looking at another potential replacement for the Shadow. An '04 KLR650 with just under 7k miles.
What I like:
The low miles
The Acerbis Handguards
New chain and sprockets
Riding position.
What I don't like:
Supertrapp can (no loud pipes for me thx)
Bike obviously fell, hard.
Clutch and brake levers broken.
Gas tank dented on both sides.
Seller says that the guy he bought it from "probably did alot of wheelies with it"
felt around the edge of the fork boot, a lil' bit of oily gunk was there. Seller said it was due to the "lowering kit" on the front suspension.
Isn't replacing the chain/sprockets at 7k a bit early?
Guy wants $2900 for it. Judging by what I just listed, does this sound like a good deal? I'm kinda stuck on this one....
Not a good deal at all. I'd keep looking.

I got my Klr, and then one for my buddy, both in riding decent condition, for $1100 each. That deal sucks.

Yeah, It's been at the shop for a while. They guys there are perplexed by it. And these are guys who make their living fixing older Japenese bikes.
They took it all apart, compared it to the diagram in the repair manual, along with their knowledge of bikes and couldn't find any reason why it wouldn't fit.
I replaced the friction plates with EBC plates, however, they say that they will go in with the stock metal plates/springs. The springs and metal plates look to be in decent shape and aren't warped or anything.
I'm hoping I didn't FUBAR the clutch when I tried to do it myself, but that might be the case.
