Project: Grom 2.0

With SuperGrom nearly complete with everything I wanted to do on it, time for another project.

Picked up a 2018 Grom last night.

This will be a much smaller list of mods.

This bike already came with Ohlins forks and shock, KTX110 handlebars, and the OTC chain adjusters that I had planned on doing.

In addition there is a full Leo Vince exhaust and nice ASV levers which probably won’t stay.

The plans for this Grom will be:
- CBR300 motor
- aRacer ECU, splitter, AF2 autotune
- Brembo RCS14 master
- Stainless brake lines

Last night I noticed this is ABS model, so that will need to get removed as well.

Once I find a CBR300 donor bike, the swap will happen rather quickly after doing the crank recall.

Hot tip: don’t lose your only key.

New lock set installed this morning. Fixed the sticky directionals button on the controls.

Rearsets are off and ready for powder coating.

Silly design that the swingarm pivot is also the reset mounting bolt. Pushed a threaded rod through to keep the bike from folding while removing the swingarm pivot rod.

The '78 Hawk is the same way!!! I also thought it was weird.

Bought a spare clutch pressure plate to convert the bike from the factory 3 bolt clutch to 6 bolt. This is a common mod for these bikes with engine builds.

Scored a CBR300 donor bike today for the motor swap. Will be checking compression, new spark plug, and cleaning the fuel injector before it goes in the bike.

All done. Still waiting on the rearsets to be powdercoated, so the threaded rod is holding the bike together in the meantime. The swingarm pivot is also the rearset bolt.

Why would you delete the rear master?

The rear master reservoir cup, not the master cylinder. It’s in a terrible location and requires removing a decent amount of plastics to access it for fluid changes. The tube mod is much cleaner and easier.

Love fresh powdercoat!

300cc donor motor looks good after the compression test

- 428 chain and sprockets ordered
- side fairings ordered
- misc hardware ordered: Dzus, hose clamps, angled valve stems, etc.
- CBR300 --> Grom wire adapters, exhaust, radiator, motor bracket in process of ordering

remaining items for the build:
- Brembo RCS14 with reservoir kit
- non ABS stainless brake lines
- rotor upgrades
- michelin tires
- motion pro throttle kit with kill switch

to keep the OEM foot shifter and brake lever with the 250/300 swap, you need to either bend your lever or use a stack of OEM swingarm pivot washers.
wanting to keep this bike a sleeper, i opted to go with the washers and not buy an aftermarket dirtbike foot lever like many others do.

Brake lines ordered. now i'll be able to pull the ABS system out

fresh spark plug arrived.
new O2 sensor arrives tomorrow for the aRacer AF1

Side fairings arrived today. Surprisingly only in 2 weeks. My red ones for the other bike took 2 months.

Did some prep tonight for the 300 swap.
- air box removed
- gas tank removed
- exhaust removed
- all electrical disconnected, except one sensor


Just need to figure out how to remove this sensor, disconnect the throttle cables from the throttle bodies, and drain the oil.

Got all the ABS system unplugged and loose. So once the new brake lines arrive, I can delete the ABS system completely. I’m using an aftermarket dash and ECU, so I shouldn’t see any ABS warning lights. Also getting a plug to keep the circuit complete for the ABS module plug.

All the 300 swap was ordered from Wicked Grom in NH. Adapter wires, high mount exhaust header, motor bracket, modified radiator, no cut elbow for the throttle bodies, and all other required hardware.

New spark plug and gearing arrived too.
Going with 16/32 with 428 pitch. OEM is 420 pitch.

Once I bring home the donor bike, I should be good to go for the swap.

Once the oxygen sensor was removed, the oil was drained and the motor was removed. Three motor mount bolts was all it took.

Now I’m ready for the 300 motor.
