I don't have any desire to tie down a bike from the grips. The more vertical the straps are the less laterally stable it is, and the greater the chances you have of breaking/bending your clipons or messing up your grips & throttle tube if you either over snug the bike or hit some big bumps. The grips themselves & simply aren't meant to handle loads like that.
Can it be done safely? Of course... but you have to be careful and wayyyy too many people over tighten.
The bottom triple clamp is a different story. For years now, that's the spot I'm checking first. As long as there's no interference issues, that's where I'm going. Better lateral stability, no chance of breaking or bending a bar or screwing up my grips, and half the time I don't even need a wheel chalk. Just another strap on the back pulling the bike rearwards to keep it rolling back & forth.
