yup, idle on the left of the carb and you're not going to quiet it down to xr levels. it's an angry 2 stroke, they're loud by nature.

I've been tinkering with it in the backyard, but it's just a little too loud. It currently has an FMF shorty as a silencer, with what looks like a stock midpipe. Is that known to be a loud can?

Is there any way I can quiet it down? will repacking make much of a difference?

after googling, I was considering to sell the shorty, get an FMF 'Q' or getting a stock silencer. If I wanted a little bit more, I might try the dB snorkel
Take the carb out and clean it good. That could help with the idle and it probably needs it anyway.

You should also be able to find a 96db spark arrester pipe for it. It will quiet it down a bit but it is a two stroke and they are a bit noisey

125's are not supposed to idle, be quiet or have breaks, none of my 2 strokes idle and there loud its more fun that way nice find on the RM, good price.

Heh, Dan beat me to the punch. Stand at the end of hot pit by T1 for GTL, you'll hear the two strokes as they come at yah, and then you listen to motards as they wind around the rest of the track.

I got the Q on my 125 and it worked well at silencing it over stock.

My will idle all day long.

Kevin's cycle racing has a Turbine Core listed in the bargain bin for an 01 RM125. That might be worth a shot. The DB Snorkel is the most quiet of all the options.

angry indeed...this bike is just loud, period, so I'm going to leave it as is and just ride trials/CH

how often do you guys ride these?

sans trailer, and being over an hour away from CH means I'll prob. only ride 1-2 times/month...so less than 10 times/year

it was just different with the XR being neighborhood friendly because I'd take it out 2-3 times/week, and easily ride 100 times/year (especially if it snowed), but the riding really wasn't as serious as the trails, so I'll be riding less, but having more fun

jeremy, what's up man? thanks, the dirt bike is awesome. I do have a street bike but I honestly think it'll see more track miles than street this year. Still got the ninja and parking in front of the engineering building?

    thanks for the link

I'm going to wait for now, and see if I ever feel the need to ride at home. If I don't, I'll going to leave it as is, if I do, I'll try the DB snorkel. have you heard one before?

I ran the DB snorkel on My YZ250 about 2 years ago before buying an FMF Q for it. I switched to a YZ125 last year and ran the DB snorkel for a few months before putting an FMF Q on that. The snorkel is quieter for sure. The only down side is that there is some pipe drool in really cold weather.[QUOTE=Bhavesh;736673

does it mute that sharp "t" sound that you hear everytime the engine fires?

I also tried tuning the carb to idle, and failed. Aren't there supposed to be 2 screws? 1 for the air/fuel mixture at higher engine speed/throttle and 1 for low engine speed/throttle?

    I only saw 1 screw

I tried turning that copper screw (next to the air intake) all the way in, then out in 1/2 turn increments, but it didn't seem to have any effect on the bike's ability to idle

then to confuse me more, above where it says "CHOKE" on the black plastic are the words "IDLE ADJUST"

You can't twist that plastic piece and I know the top black plastic cap has to be the choke (you can lift it up and push it down), so couldn't figure it out

I finally just adjusted the throttle cable at the handlebars so that it will idle. But I know this isn't the correct way to do it, because I'm sure having the bar turned will change the idle speed.

    any ideas?

    manual pending...

weird, ya there is usually a philips head screw with spring on/around it for idel adjust. That little brass flat head you see in the pic is your air screw. I guess I'm not familiar with your carb because the idle adjust is definitely different than I was thinking it would be. Ya get the manual aha

On the other side of the carb will be your idle speed adjustment, which looks to be blocked by your pipe...

Edit: Assuming that's a 1999 RM125, that carb doesn't match the parts fiche... it looks like a 1998 carb, which doesn't have an external throttle stop (Idle speed) screw?

Those forks are on par with the current 09 offerings. I know because I fabbed up spacers and parts and have a set of those forks on my 08 KTM200. I could be wrong but that Keign carb may not have an adjustable idel circuit. I would set the airscrew at 1.5 turns out and tune from there.

Thought those carbs had idle adjust and choke on the same circuit. Notice the grooves on the choke pull? thought you turn that when choke is off nd it adjusts idle 100% but I had a diff carb with that capability

yeah thats what I thought too but he said it doesnt turn. Might be gummed up. Maybe he should pull the choke circuit out and do some cleaning

so the same part that I pull to activate the choke, changes the idle speed?

it seems to make sense since the top of it has print that says "open", with arrows pointing counter clock wise

I tried spinning that 10 times in each direction with no change in idle

I think the seller made a mistake; the 10th digit on the frame stamp is a "W" which corresponds to a 1998 model

shoot...I already paid the sales tax as a 1999 model...I emailed the DOR after being on hold for 10 mins...can I change that on the ST-6 before I register it at for plates?

ok, I called both the DOR and the fish and game police and they said, as long as the sales tax is paid, I can make any necessary changes at the registration office on the ST-6 (sales tax receipt)

As long as they get their money they are pretty easy. Its not like going to the registry where they are a pain in the ass even if you have done everything correctly.

hopefully that is the case, I finally have some free time and will be registering the bike for plates tomorrow

    more Q's:
-I might've added a little more oil than the 32:1 gas/oil ratio and it's smoking more. Can I safely finish this tank and run the correct ratio in the future, to fix that? or should I drain the tank immediately to avoid damage?
-are clutches supposed to be heavy duty and stick a lot? if I'm ever idling and put it into gear, it stalls. If I have it in 1st gear and rev the bike, it lurches forward, and if I don't hold the brake while stopped/clutched, the bike will occasionally roll forward.
-when you're adjusting the air screw "2 turns out", does that mean two full (360 degree) rotations, or two half (180 degree) rotations?

and is there really, no way of quieting this thing down? going out for a 30 min backyard rip is extremely convenient, and I find myself trying it at least once a week to get a fix

I figure that I can quiet down the silencer with a repacked stock silencer and dB snorkel, then muffle the mid pipe with a header/exhaust wrap (to keep the contact temperature down) and damping material covered in closed cell neoprene. I'll pull off the header wrap after wet rides to prevent rust

#1 Youre fine. Get a spare spark plug or two as you might fowl them with the extra oil.

#2 Clutch sounds like it needs some adjusting. Riding a two stroke you use a lot of clutch and need to slip it at times. If its grabbing too much you will be sad when you go up a big hill.

#3 one turn = one 360 degree rotation.

#4 Buy a quieter silencer. Pro Circuit makes a 96db one with a spark arrester. Thats what you want. You can also make a snorkel out of a heavy duty inner tube which will help a little. Two stroke by nature are a bit loud but the noise doesnt really carry.

#5 why are you wraping the pipe?

    Re: dirt bike for Bhavesh

A DB snorkel and pipe wrap will make the bike almost silent. A lot of noise comes right off the expansion chamber. It rings like a bell. Wrap will reduce that effect.

24:1 is good for a 125, but you need to be on the pipe a lot to keep it running clean.

Clutch drag is common on 125s. Adjust it, make sure the cable isn't stretched out. but you can also try different oils. I like the clutchsaver 10/30 stuff. Changing it often helps too.
