KTM 690 Enduro R (with SM trim)
Husk 701 SM
Keep stock hypermotard 1100evo SP
Bemused
I still haven't made a decision yet. I think it's down to the KTM 690 Enduro R (with the purchase of some warp9 wheels) or Husk 701 SM? The intended purpose of the bike will be back roads and the occasional trackday. As I understand it, it's the exact same motor and equipment. Thanks for the input.
The husky already comes set up for probably the same price...sooo

Husky 701SM MSRP $11800 KTM 690 Enduro R MSRP $10800
Husky 701SM has better brakes for track days and back roads.
For your described intentions I would buy the Husky (I did) if you plan on maybe running in the dirt roads or trails with it get the 690 and a set of SM wheels
+3 for the 701.
It's pretty pathetic that your only choices for a Motard are 701 or build your own. Lame.
Is the market that narrow that nothing will sell here? With such a huge variety of other type bikes available right now I just don't get it. We want more Motards!
Rant over, enjoy ur new bike.

As I understand it, the newest 701 has an updated engine with a counterbalancer which is supposedly much smoother than the 690. It also has better shocks and carries more fuel.

701.
I went to MMI I know what Im doing here chief
There is also the 701 enduro.. which could also be perverted to go SM.
If SM is in the cards I think I'd start with an SM and get a 2nd set of wheels mounted with Shinko 701's or Pirelli Scorpion Trails or something. More and more "dual-sport" like tires are getting made in 17" sized every day.
The 701 SM is a giant pile of want as far as I'm concerned.
I hear the problem you're going to have is availability. I hear these things are hard to get ahold of. The 701 Enduro is easier. .. So I hear.
Suzuki is still selling the DRZ400-SM! 2017 DRZ400SM : New for 2017, exciting new graphics!

701 Enduro are slightly easier to find.
MSRP for 701 Enduro is $11300 and MSRP for 690 Enduro R is $10800 for essentially the same bike not sure where the $500 premium for the Husky comes from.
If you can find the 701SM for $11800 or the 701 Enduro for $11300 getting the 17" SM tubeless wheels, much better brakes and the lower fork leg to make them work on the enduro would cost more than the $500 premium for getting the SM in the first place. Admittedly at the cost of not having the more dirt worthy wheels available for playing on the dirt roads if so desired.
Lol, the first listed factory accessory on the Husky 701 SM page is a fucking torque wrench.

The 2017 Husqvarna 701 Supermoto Is Perfect For The Track, The Canyons, Or Daily Life | Cycle WorldHusqvarna brought about only one change for the 2017 bike, but it’s a doozy. That's right, for 2017 it's swapped out the old 690cc engine (the one originally created for the 2012 KTM 690 Duke), for the one developed for last year’s 690 Duke.
The revised engine is more oversquare, with a larger bore (105mm versus 102mm) and shorter stroke (80mm vs. 84.5mm). It also has a new connecting rod, piston, plain bearing, and crankshaft. Best yet? Through the second balancer shaft it offers up reduced vibrations while revving an additional 1,000 rpm, with the rev limiter now set at 9,500 rpm instead of 8,500 rpm. As with the 690 Duke, the result is an additional 5 horsepower and 4.5 lb.-ft of torque, with peak power jumping from 67 hp to 72 hp, and 49.4 lb.-ft. of torque to 54 lb.-ft of torque. While the bike certainly benefits from the added power, the real magic of the engine is the second counter balancer and how it cancels vibrations; making the 701 feel like more like a twin than a single, even intro triple-digit speeds.
I have been obsessed with the 701 since the engine from the Duke got placed into it for '17, and the press and videos on this bike are really enticing. I reached out to all dealers within reasonable distance to NJ and the supermoto seems all but sold out at this point. I would go 701E since I have dreams of a dual purpose bike with a half hour wheel swap, but I can't get over the price tag out the door and adding warp9 wheels. If msrp was $2k less I would bite.
To make it super useable is probably another $2k, rade expanded tank, exhaust, map commander, air box etc. The guys on the adventure rider forums say the farkles cost as much as the bike by the time you're done!

So i brought home the Husk yesterday. Put 60 miles on it so far and it seems pretty cool. I didn't realize there was no tach. Now I just need some frame sliders ASAP... any leads?
These were pretty my final three when choosing a bike over the last month. I went for the Ducati because I love that air cooled twin. Between the other two I would have preferred the KTM based on it having a tach and I like the look a tad better.
I'm curious, what are the owners manual break in procedures without a tach(not that I ever follow them anyway)?
I guess they expect you to approximate the RPMs, but 6K isn't bad. The break in procedures on the Z125 are laughably ridiculous. Top speed would be around 35 mph for the first few hundred miles.
How does it compare to the Hyper so far?
I rode Joel's 701 yesterday for one lap and all I can say is WOW... It's awesome

Rick Breen has an assortment of the R&G sliders on his bike and I was thinking about buying the factory rear sliders and the fork leg protectors for mine. A couple of options for you either way.
FYI the stock plastic skid plate from the 701 Enduro/690 Enduro will bolt right up to the 701 SM. I had it installed before I picked up the bike to double as a catch pan.

Just ride it like you want to ride it without holding it at any particular RPM for a long period of time. Load it up, coast a bit, load it up again, run it through the gears etc. Keep the oil clean and enjoy. Biggest thing that needs to be done during break in is to get the rings to seat up against the cylinder walls.
