I heard (not sure where) that if you're at a red light and the sensor doesn't pick up the bike, you can hit your stater button and that could help.... I've done it before w/ no problem, but found out today that it's not the brightest idea...
I hit it and the bike shut down. Now it won't start... I turn the key, the lights come on, then right when i hit the starter button, it all goes dead.. and I can hear a 'click' under the seat. I rolled the bike and was able to pop it into gear and it fired up... so I'm back at work now.. but the thing won't start now. (unless i roll it and pop the clutch again)
Any idea what the problem might be here? I'm going to pop the clutch to get home, but I'm trying to figure out if this is something I can fix myself????
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated...
thank you

BIG NO NO!!!
Stop me if I'm wrong but once you have the bike started and its running, you're not suppose to hit the starter button again because it seriously fucks up the starter. It strips the teeth or something.
I am attaching a hard drive magnet(s) to my kickstand this weekend.
It was told to me to lower the kickstand on the strip in the road after putting the bike in neutral.
i realize that now.. but i dont think it strips teeth like it would in a car....
pretty sure it's either stuck, or it's something electrical.
Not too sure on that, but whoever gave you that adivse is a total moron.

hitting the starter while the engine is running will not hurt anything on most bikes
the engagement of the starter gear is centrifical and not on a solenoid like a car

any idea what might be messed up???
If you get stranded at a red light, you SHUT THE BIKE OFF *THEN* hit the starter button. Turn it off, fire it back up. It works on a lot of the older pads in Manch. Something about interupting the mag field...
I'm gonna guess that you CAN damage your starter doing what you did. But it sounds like somehow you just killed your battery and it's juuuuuuust not quite strong enough to turn the pig over...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
someone said it could be a fuse...... ???
man, i'm bummin...
you probably fried something electrical. You won't fucked up the teeth on the starter on most bikes. Sometimes just revving the engine will work to put out a stronger magnetic charge. I'd bet you blew out a fuse or a connection somewhere. Take the seat off and find where the click is coming from.
It's all water under the bridge, and we do enter the next round-robin. Am I wrong?
ya, a buddy of mine here at work said i probably blew the startor fuse.... and said there is probably a relay switch. now i gotta try and find that when i get home...
if there's anyone in SE mass that feels like givin me a hand, i'll buy ya a 30 pack!!!!!
Yea I knew if you did it in a car its not good, but wasn't too sure about the bike. I just assumed it was bad as well. Thanks for the info. Hope you get it fixed.
hey neek, not sure about the starter but I didnt come across this link for care on your bike :

Is the bike in neutral? Did you release the clutch lever?
Do those two things & lemme know.

ive been doing the starter thing for years with no problems. like randy said its not like a car so it doesnt actually grind anything... it just spins. but all you have to do is thumb it a couple of times. just give it a zip zip zip real quick. dont hold it down for too long.

I will have to try the starter thing sometime.

I've tried the starter thing a few times at various intersections. Each time is has never worked. I have never tried turning off the bike and then starting it again. I usually wait until the light cycles ones and if it doesn't change, I get the F out of there.
Ditto...Does it really work? I just wait till no ones coming and run the damn light.

Me 3. I've tried the kickstand thing down on the pad, the starter thing, whatever. Of the VERY few lights I hit around here on my way to various routes, theres a few I know will not change until a car pulls up behind me. So now I pretty much pull up to them, make sure no ones around, and blow the light.Originally posted by rmbbikes

I know a little about everything, and alot about nothing.
actualy if ya read the driving manual (i didnt but i know its in there) if i light is not functioning properly you can use it like a stop sign, just not sure on how long your supposed to wait to consider it not working properly

KBNever had a problem, even had a cop behind me once when I ran the light with my car; he just followed me through the light too.

The starter will not engage if the engine is running unlike a car, no worry about damaging starter or flywheel teeth. It sounds like a loose battery connection to me, check it. Then check for a dead battery. Then for some blown fuse. Then for fried wiring. Then call someone who knows what they're doing.![]()

I don't think Police will give you a hard time about waiting a cycle and running the light. They know about bikes and tripping traffic lights.
If a certain type of vehicle is street legal, and a light system does not support all the street legal vehicles on the road, doesn't a small bit of the responsibility fall on the city/town/traffic system maintenance company thingy keeping the thing working in general? Not making excuses, I'm just wondering about what may be said in court procedings should someone be cited for something like that.

According to a civil case jury, the responsibilty is not so small...Originally posted by LiononaLeash
