Shit
Things like this make me afraid to ride.
Yeah I do not know what reason he has for bein over there, but it also looks like that side of his truck is fine. Bumper might be missing though. Awful. I'm about to hop on Mass to ride home myself.
I was driving on Storrow on my way back to work less than 10 min after the accident. I drove under the Mass Ave. bridge and saw the scene.
I hate to admit it, but I've pulled an illegal u-turn at that spot before (it's the only way to get on to Mass. Ave. heading into town from Storrow without going over to the Cambridge side of the river, doing a u turn there, and then doubling back over the bridge), so it wouldn't surprise me if that is exactly what the blue pickup did.
Really sad, really disturbing. RIP.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
that's definitely not the right way to pick up mass ave south from storrow west.
try this (assuming you need to pick up mass ave that close to storrow):

I saw the truck from the other side.
The front driver side was all pushed in from straight on.
It was if the bike had hit straight head-on. (maybe someone drifted across the double yellow?)
I imagine that would cause the truck to pull left after the bike was thrown clear.

There is a left-hand ramp off Storrow Drive that requires a right turn onto the bridge heading West towards Cambridge. Some cars take this ramp, then make an [illegal] left turn onto Mass Ave towards Back Bay.
I suspect that's what this pickup did. It's somewhat common, at least early in the morning. I play hockey some mornings at MIT and have seen people do it.
No it isn't. Just go past that exit to the Kenmore Square exit and take the first left back to Mass Ave. It will add a whopping 0.2 or 0.3 miles to your commute. At 20mph that would be an additional 54 seconds.

“It's 2 minutes for any capable adult.”
The news said today that the pickup did make an illegal U-turn, strike the motorcycle and then an SUV ran the rider over.

That is really said to hear.
Think there's any chance this guy could be charged with Vehicular Manslaughter?
More
He last saw his family on Father's Day.A former Berklee College of Music student who was killed Monday afternoon in a crash on the Massachusetts Avenue bridge loved riding his motorcycle and had a passion for creating his own music. “Everybody said he was always the one who brought peace and always had the right thing to say,” William Cerullo, said about his son, Vail W. Cerullo. “If there was an issue or argument, Vail would be the one to figure out how to resolve it.”
....State Police say the driver of the pickup truck, an 18-year-old Gloucester man, made an “improper turn” in front of Cerullo. The motorcycle (a Triumph Bonneville T100) hit the pick up truck and Cerullo was then run over by an SUV.

Jesus.
This 18 year old should be charged with constructive/vehicular manslaughter, no way around it. I feel for him, because there are places I take the "accepted" short-cut, but not unless I am 100% sure it is safe. I know this turn, and I would NEVER do this there.
Prayers for the Cerullo family.
