Is this a serious question? (never know with gingers)
Blipping is simply giving the throttle a quick partial twist just as you pull the clutch and downshift. The purpose it to attempt to match the engine RPMs with the downshifted RPMs.
Basically, it prevents that jolt you get if you simple stomped down a gear.
They dont seem too choppy. Pretty smooth actually, other than the increase in engine braking. I dont downshift leaned over, but I wouldnt feel uncomfortable at this point doing it. The only place I downshift even remotely leaned is 1, and Im done shifting before I REALLY toss it in.
*shrug*
Totally serious. I do a ton of stuff on the bike that I dont realize I'm doing it (like trailbraking) without someone telling me, or I do things I shouldnt be doing and develop bad habits that are a bitch for me to break (piss poor body position)

Werd, Richie ain't no slouch!
But once you start braking harder & harder the rear may start to break loose a bit when you grab those downshifts as there's gonna be a little less weight back there... this is where clutch modulation and/or blipping will help you (unless you have a slipper, in which case that'll probably kick in).
So you aren't downshifting while leaned over for 11? Go in deepah! I see a lot of the motard guys downshifting with their knee awfully close to the pavement.

That is early Richie... you can easily pick up some time there. I mean no, don't, then you will be faster than me. Nevermind.

Ya dude, the second seam is my roll-off point & my bike's a Scotty compared to your Kate Moss.
Try holding it WFO past the seam.![]()

I don't think we're talking about the same cone. There are 2 seams(cracks) that run across the pavement. Then there is an apex cone at the left well past the second seam. then a cone on the right near the curbing/jump. If you hold the gas open to the first apex cone, you will be knee down going into the braking zone with no way to straighten the bike up much before shifting. This is the real reason for the different lines I was talking about.
Most guys will roll off at the seam which stands the bike up into the braking zone. Really fast guys will stay on the gas well past the seam, requiring them to stay leaned left into the braking zone.
Edit: this is even true for a 600 Pete. You need to stay on the gas too!
richie posted up a medal!
I have no idea what seam you guys are talking about...shit

This one shows the seams clearly. It actually shows more detail than my eyes can pick up. The crack you can see in the vid at the apex cone is not really noticeable while riding. It's way too small.

Whoa, I fail.
Nothing like some expert video to show just how much I suck! Great video though (especially in HQ), thanks
I'm amazed by people who look back at race pace... especially taking a hand off the bars over the hill. Do many of you do this? The only people I see doing it are Penguin instructors. I'm convinced if I did this it would end catastrophically.

I'M TRYIN PAUL! I should have said ''was'' my roll off point. I'm holding it open past the seam & almost to the cone on the left nowOriginally Posted by Paul_E_D

The new issue of Sport Rider has a nice article about rev matching. It doesn't talk much about trail braking but it does tie into this discussion quite well.

I think since there are so many "seams" at Loudon, we should just line it like a football field so we can rever to which yard line we use for braking point![]()
Ha! Yeah, but in your vid it's more obvious. The Hi Def camera, like in the link I posted, show way too much detail. There are 2 full length cracks that run 90 degrees across the line going into T11. Most people use them as reference points. It looks like you do too, as you rolled off just before the second seam.
Thanks kitt! I can honestly say I am sitting up straight while braking and banging down gears while going into 11. Its just one of those little things that will most likely save a sec or two! Def. neat to see how the fast guys do it!
