Technically the transponder is the opposite of
your personal lap timer, I think.

The Lap Timer beacon is a transmitter. Your lap timer on your bike
    receives that signal.

A Race Transponder is a transmitter too. The track has a receiver that collects all the data and keeps it unique.

    Is that right?

i would assume...i would think thats the only way they could really keep it unique and "collect" the info

to be honest i just zip tie it to my fork tube and go fast, and let them figure it out haha

Laptimer is a great tool to have on the bike once you are comfortable out there and can deal with the additional information.

For myself, I found having a laptimer during my Novice / early Amateur races a bit distracting. I was still at the point where dedicating brainwaves to processing laptimes and mulling over the data wasn't such a hot idea.

It's handy later on thou to let you know what's going on right then. If I'm chasing a guy and running mid-1:21's, then I know I 'theoretically' have another second in the backpocket. If I'm running behind a pack doing 22's, then I know WTF AM I DOING and need to get past them cause they are holding me up.

    etc.

Please excuse my blondness but its gotta be difficult (let alone dangerous)taking your eyes off the track to check the timer? I would think you could become transfixxed and get upset if your not doing what you had hoped you were? like reading a map on your tank bag?
If thats not the case when do most people check the time, or where are they on the track?
Sorry, I don't race (just ride)and maybe just don't know.

Just a glance on the front straight. It is a slight distraction, but I put my head down under the bubble anyway, and sometimes don't even look at the track. I know where I'm going after thousands of laps.

If it makes you mad to see your laptimes, well, you'll get over it. The clock doesn't lie! (normally)
