Whats up guys, but more importantly - Hello ladies!
Names Tony, new to the forums and riding in general. I'm still working on finding a class to get my license, and plan on purchasing a bike shortly after (possibly from someone on here). Wortooyomamma says you guys are great and hes awesome so I guess I'll have to see for myself. Not sure what type of bike I'm looking to get yet and am open to all tips and suggestions for first timers. I'm about 6' and not exactly what you'd call a lightweight. I'll add more later cause I'm at work and my phones about to die. Look forward to gettin to know you guys.

Welcome, Tony. I'm NOT 6 feet tall... but SIZE DON'T MATTAH, FOO!!! I'LL STILL WRECK YOU!!! WHAT YOU GONNA DO 'BOUT IT??? BRING IT ON!!!
But seriously now, I'm guessing you brought up your size because you think that relates to choosing a bike? Meh... it does, but it doesn't. At least, not so much when it comes to your first bike. No more than if you were buying a car.
For classes, since you're in Waltham from the looks of your profile, check out www.ironstoneventures.com. They've got a class at Bunker Hill which looks like it's going to be the closest location for ya.

I went horseback riding with my family in the Dominican a while back and sorta felt bad for the horse! Just figured I'd throw the information out there in case it was something to consider when purchasing a bike. Thanks for the info about bunkah hill oreo, ill definitely look into it!

You didn't mention the most important part of the equation: your budget.
Most stock UJM's are sprung for a 170lb or so rider. You can buy heavier front and rear springs for a couple hundred bucks. Forks are trivial to upgrade this way, rear shock(s) can vary.

Welcome, You'll soon learn we are a bunch of opinionated assholes and Wordtooyourmama isn't so awesome. We already have an awesome on this forum... But that's a different story. I say a nice Ninja 2fiddy would be a great first bike.
Welcome!
Tips: Buy a cheap bike, quality (read: not cheap) gear, and never stop being eager to learn.

UPDATE:
Ok so I'm all signed up and ready for the BRC. I went with Streetwise Cycle School cause they had one of the only (upcoming) class schedules/times that worked with my crazy work schedule. Any tips on the BRC? Maybe stuff to bring they don't mention? I'm not nervous or anything just want to know what to expect going into it. I think I got a buddy to sign up for the same class so at least I'll have someone I know there with me.
Also if anyone finds any nice beginner (sport) bikes on the market feel free to send me a PM so I can look into it!
49 states do it one way, and Massachusetts does it their own way.
