if you are going to be living IN boston, then i recommend just getting a motard or a scooter. youll hate life riding a sportbike in boston.

if youre worried about running a supermoto around the track here...dont be. the fast guys up here are within a few seconds of fast guys on 600s.

Honestly i would love a sumo, prob is this is the type i want' http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/mcy/3400921461.html
and even the "Cheaper" DRZ's are expensive.

how is theft in boston? i did hear non sportbikes get stolen a lot less frequently. Although i will have theft coverage, i dont want to use it.

It depends on what neighborhood you are in and where you park. Just a couple of streets one direction or the other can make a big difference. I parked on the sidewalk in South Boston for 10 years, and I never heard of anyone getting a bike stolen in Southie, though I'm sure it happens. Do you have a place to live yet?

Dirt bikes and sport bikes are always going to have higher theft rates because they are light, often crashed, have high demand, and can be used on dirt or track without a title.

Theft is likely in Boston. Buy a motard if you plan to not leave the city, which is Tiny compared to any other in the US. A motard will suck if you're heading to good roads in western mass, NH, VT, etc where the decent roads are. Boston and metro Boston are cool places to live, a lot different from west coast.

I love how all these folks who don't live in Boston are such experts on living in Boston.

Lived in South Boston and Dorchester for 14 years, owned seven bikes, zero stolen. The only person I know who has had a bike stolen is Ted Duncan.

It totally depends on the neighborhood and where you park.

    welcome dude

i first learned how to ride up in Ramona. All the other guys are right about road conditions/general douches with a disdain for bikes/A+ squiddery around here. There are some awesome roads west of boston that are a lot of fun, so don't get too bummed about riding out here. This is the best possible area for your field as well. I go through all of the hospitals around here, and its quite amazing.

I am still looking for an apartment, anyone have any suggestions? been looking as west roxbury, brookling, cambridge and a few others. trying to stay close to BUMC or at least an easy commute via public transportation. problem is the apartment needs to be pet friendly, since it will be me, my fiance and our 20lbs cocker spaniel. trying to stay below 1500 with at least some utilities included, with an early January move with. any help or suggestions greatly appreciated,

ummm...IIRC, brookline (while it has some nice neighborhoods) to BMC is a long ride using the green line inbound...I think the buses are faster, but even that takes awhile, and are usually packed during peak hours

but like garandman said - it depends on the neighborhoods...can you take a trip out? you won't really know until you see it..

BU Medical School on Albany St?

If so, Cambridge, West Roxbury and Brookline are all far away in travel time. It's considered to be in the South End neighborhood but is close to South Boston, and part of Dorchester. Rach of those neighborhoods has "nice" areas and "not so nice" areas. Not so nice is an understatement.

We rented our apartment in South Boston to a couple while he was going to school there in South Boston. He rode his bicycle.

You are facing a few obstacles. First not a lot of apartments come up in January. Second, your budget is tight. Finally, a dog is going to remove 80% of candidate apartments. We love dogs, both my wife and I had a dog, but there is no way we would rent to anyone with a pet.

If you are interested in South Boston and PM me I can give you the name of a RE agent we know. There are agents who work with the owner and the owner pays a fee, there are agents that work with renters and renters pay the fee, and then some landlords rent directly: ask the question.

But you need to get on it NOW to find a place by January - in fact it's kind of late in the game.

Short tank range, anytime on the highways sucks, and you have no windscreen or fairings to block the cold wind.

I have parked my bike all over the South End without a single problem. Get yourself a decent cover that is compact enough to take with you everywhere the bike goes and cover the bike while parked. Seriously decreases the likelihood of parking tickets and theft.

yea, a supermoto sounds aweseom, and fun. its just seems like a sumo is better as a second bike, in addition to another bike as opposed to a only bike. but for the right price i will consider it.

been keeping an eye open for good deals but i've only really been looking on here and craigslist, any other forums to check out for more bikes?

thanks again everyone, a lot of good info here.

i get 200+ miles out of mine and you can get a larger tank for just about any dirtbike thats been converted to sumo.
ive also done 450 mile days on mine without too much issue. nothing that standing up doesnt help. im looking into a more comfortable seat too.
